Portugal Postal Services prices up 2.0 pct May 1, 2006

Prices of the postal services in Portugal will grow on average by 2.0 pct as of May 1, 2006, according to a publication of Portuguese economic news portal Agencia Financeira on April 27, 2006.

The price increase resulted from two agreements earlier signed between Portuguese postal operator CTT-Correios de Portugal and the country’s communications regulator Anacom. Apart from the price increase, the agreements envisage also improvement of the postal services quality.

However, prices of stamps for up to 20 g normal and express mail will remain unchanged at 0.30 euro ($0.38) and 0.45 euro ($0.57), respectively.

Considering the inflation of 2.3 pct projected for 2006, the above-mentioned price revision is not a rise, but a reduction of 0.3 pct.

The employees of CTT are striking on April 28, 2006 against the increase of only 1.5 pct of their 2006 salaries, proposed by the company’s management. The strike is organised and supported by the national postal and telecommunication workers’ trade union SNTCT.
