The tabling of amendments to the Postal Services Bill in the UK, that aim to protect post users, has been praised by Consumer Focus.
The amendments, tabled by Lord Browne of Belmont, will require public consultation before changes can be made to the universal postal service and ensure Royal Mail’s performance can be effectively scrutinised. The amendments will also require all postal operators to offer independent investigation of complaints made by post users.
Consumer Focus’ Robert Hammond said: “Royal Mail handle over eight million items of household mail each day. The universal postal service provides for a single price for mail sent across the country and sets out how often mail is collected and delivered. It’s vital that consumers have a universal service they can rely on.
“These much needed amendments will protect the rights of consumers and ensure that changes to the universal postal service can’t be rushed through without proper scrutiny.
“The interests of consumers must not be drowned out as argument over the Bill intensifies. To date, the debate has too often been characterised by emotion and dogma.
“All parties must focus on building a high performing, modern and responsive Royal Mail and postal sector that truly meet the needs of UK consumers.”
