Australia Post has rejected claims it is not giving the East Arnhem Shire in the Northern Territory enough money to deliver postal services to remote Indigenous communities.

Australia Post has rejected claims it is not giving the East Arnhem Shire in the Northern Territory enough money to deliver postal services to remote Indigenous communities.

The shire says it is spending $80,000 a year on postal services for nine remote communities, including Groote Eylandt and Elcho Island.
The shire’s chief executive, Ian Bodill, says despite this, the service is still unacceptable.

“Two of our communities do not receive a regular daily service, one is currently on only once a week.”

Australia Post says it is willing to work with the shire to make sure delivering the mail is “cost neutral”.

It says it has provided the shire with models to achieving this.
Bodill says Australia Post has told him there is no extra money available.
