Govt going to convert PPO Deptt into Postal Corporation

LAHORE, June 4 : The government going to convert Pakistan Post Office Department into Postal Corporation within a span of one year. This was disclosed by Federal Minister for Railways and Communications,
Lt Gen (r) Javed Ashraf while talking to the newsmen here Monday. The Minister said that a working in this direction has already begun so that Post Office is
converted into an independent organization free of government clutches and
leverage financially. “It has become feasible for the Post Office because it is no more in red”, he said. On the other hand, he said it has become profitable and that is why salaries and benefits of postmen have increased. “You’ll soon see postmen appearing in a good uniform and a scheme to provide them motorbikes would also be implemented”. There are other initiatives being taken by Pakistan Post Office. It has signed Memorandum of Understanding with Western Union Bank to facilitate Pakistanis world wide to send money home upto the Post Office branch. The facility would provide a further check to the illegal currency business called ‘Hundi’ and people would be able to have their receipts from Overseas Pakistanis at their doorstep. The Pakistan Post Office has also made an agreement with United Bank Limited to provide “Post Office Counters” at its nearly 350 branches which the bank intends to close down. The accounts would be shifted to the Post Office Counters and the Department would assume infrastructure expenditure. The deal would become an avenue of income for the Post Office Department, he said.
