Consignia Protects Post Office Brand
In its pledge to protect its intellectual property, Consignia today announced it had successfully challenged two companies using the words ‘Post Office’ without authority. The first case against Software.com involved ‘post.office’ being used as a product name on its website. In the UK these words are a trademark of Consignia, owner of the Post Office brand. Software.com could therefore not sell its product in the UK under that name without licensing its use from Consignia. The action was settled on the basis that Software.com, now Openwave Systems Inc, took a licence under which royalties are payable to Consignia. In the second case against Giant Games Ltd, ‘Post Office’ was used as a domain name, again without Consignia’s agreement. The case has been settled on terms which provide for the transfer of the domain name to Consignia. Jessie Newitt, Post Office Senior Brand Manager, said: ‘Research has shown that the Post Office is a trusted and valued brand with our millions of customers and Consignia is committed to upholding those values. Consignia will therefore always take action to eliminate any source of confusion to those customers who are interested in Post Office products and services.'” (Source: Consignia/PR Newswire)
