United Parcel Service is expanding mail pickup service by mid-2002

United Parcel Service Inc (Atlanta, GA) will expand its mail pickup service to approximately 30 major US cities by mid-2002. It introduced the service in Dallas, TX, and Atlanta, GA, in spring-2001. UPS is taking advantage of US postal rules that give customers mailing a minimum of 500 pieces at once a discount on first-class rates. UPS collects enough letters to get a discount of two cents for each 34-cent stamp. The savings are passed on to customers, but UPS charges them about $2 for each sack of mail it picks up. The original article discusses the UPS mail pickup service and its implications in further detail.
