Business growth fuels Simarco recruitment drive

Simarco has announced that it is planning a substantial rise in staff numbers because of an increase in business at home and abroad. The UK-based independent freight and logistics firm says that it expects its employee roster to grow by one-fifth over the course of the next year.

The firm currently employs 110 people at four sites, including its headquarters at Witham in Essex and offices in Liverpool, Manchester and Wellingborough.

Simarco’s managing director, Simon Reed, said that recruitment was necessary to maintain levels of customer service.

“The volumes of exports, imports and domestic freight traffic which we’re handling means that we need more skilled individuals.

“However, they won’t be short-term appointments simply to cope with an acutely busy period. We believe that a stable workforce is one of the key components of our success and we have no desire to change that approach.”

Reed said that the prospective recruitment followed an increase of 10% in staff numbers since February last year.

He added that many of Simarco’s existing staff had been with the company for more than five years. The firm had also instigated a policy of training up more junior staff itself.

The new posts to be created during the next year are likely to include positions in management, operations, warehousing and drivers.

The announcement comes only weeks after Simarco revealed that its turnover for the last 12 months had leapt by just under 22% to £22m, buoyed by an expansion in its services.

In the last year, the company added new overland routes into Turkey and Germany, improved partnership deals in Poland and Belgium, and increased the frequency of deliveries to Spain from twice weekly to daily.

The volume of pallets it handled within the Palletforce network also broke the 100,000 barrier.

Reed said that he expected sales to increase and services to be expanded still further in the next few months.

“We are determined not to stand still. We have exciting plans in store both in the UK and overseas and see more capable staff as important in helping us realise those goals.”
