Lithuania Post upgrades post office IT network

Lithuania Post has completed the computerisation of its main post offices, adding more than 200 branches onto its IT network in the last six months. The company said almost all of its 700 post offices are now on the IT system, including 62 in the Vilnius region, 59 in the Kaunas region, 47 in the Klaipėda region, 48 in Panevėžys and 28 in Šiauliai.

Post offices that were already using computer systems have also been upgraded through the LTL 2m (EUR 580,000) project.

Viktoras Kaškelis, Lithuania Post‘s head of IT, said: “The computerization of all main post offices will enable to raise customer service level – the services will be provided in an easier and simpler way.

“Also, the staff will have better working conditions: they will not need to fill in various documents, forms, and so on.”

The Post told Post&Parcel that the project means residents will receive a wider range of services, with the expected addition of services impossible without the IT system, such as certain insurance products and consumer credit.

This would be particularly convenient for customers living in small towns, said a spokesperson.

Kaškelis said Lithuania Post has a strategic priority to gradually update all of the hardware in IT systems used across the country, with the post office computerisation project the first stage of making all activities at the Post more efficient.

Lithuania Post made a LTL 736,000 net profit (EUR 213,160) last year on sales of over LTL 183m (EUR 53m), its first year in the black for four years thanks to a 5.2% growth in sales and its cost-cutting measures.
