DHL expands its Dublin facility

DHL International’s Dublin Airport gateway is to be extended, to permit wider use of automated processes, thus enabling the facility to handle the greater throughput DHL is forecasting.
Two months ago, the company opened a courier base on the north side of Dublin and intends expanding its depot on the city’s Western Industrial Estate. Its base in the city centre handles mainly documents and small packages.
Meanwhile, owing to increased traffic congestion in the centre of Dublin, it has been found quicker for couriers to make deliveries either on foot or by bicycle.

Michael Farrell (pictured above), DHL’s country operations manager, says the downturn in business preceded the terrorist attacks in the USA. “Last year the market was very good, reflecting the general buoyancy of the economy.
“Hi-tech exports from Ireland that call for air express shipment now represent a significant volume of our business,” he adds.
