DPD Germany launches parcel shop to parcel shop shipping service

DPD Germany has launched a new shipping service for parcels to be sent from one parcel shop to another. The company said last week that all 6,000 of its DPD ParcelShops have been made available as dispatch points as well as pickup points.

DPD said shop-to-shop shipping rates were priced from EUR 3.70, as the company targets the service at individuals and small business shippers.

Shipping services will be offered for parcel sizes extra small, small, medium and large.

Shipment is paid online before items are dropped off at a local DPD parcel shop. The recipient then receives an email notifying them that it has arrived in their local parcel shop.

Boris Winkelmann, the DPD Germany chief executive, said the new service came as the result of DPD ParcelShops becoming a popular alternative delivery point for consumers unable to receive deliveries at home.

“Highly efficient”

“Many consignees who are not at home during the day are already redirecting their shipments to one of our 6,000 DPD ParcelShops,” he said.

“We therefore want to make this option available to all private and small-scale business shippers at the stage when the order is placed. In addition, delivery to a shop is highly efficient, which means that we can offer this product at very competitive prices.”

DPD said the new service provides free insurance for liability up to EUR 520, and shipping is provided as a carbon neutral service.

Parcel shipping can be tracked online, with DPD ParcelShops promising extended opening hours.

DPD Germany is part of DPDgroup, the La Poste-owned international express parcels business, which currently has 16,000 parcel shop locations across Europe, with plans to expand to 26,000 by 2016.

In Germany, DPD is currently pushing to achieve a target of doubling its market share to 15% by 2020, within a highly competitive parcels market.
