Mobile app specialist GrabTaxi trials parcel delivery service

GrabTaxi is trialling a next-day parcel delivery service as part of its plans to expand beyond its core taxi-booking business. Working with e-commerce specialist AlphaFast, GrabTaxi launched the ‘Parcel-Document’ service in Bangkok last month. Customers can book a courier in the same way that they use GrabTaxi to hail a cab. The document will be delivered the next day if booked before 3pm.

Vee Charununsiri, country head of GrabTaxi (Thailand) Co Ltd, said that the parcel delivery service was part of a range of new services, including: GrabCar, which allows users to book “premium” chaffeur-driven vehicles rather than just standard taxis; GrabXL, a 12-seater service; GrabBike, a motorbike taxi service; and GrabCar+.

Charununsiri commented: “We started out as a taxi booking app but have now expanded to include cars, limos, motorbikes and delivery services. These were introduced because there were gaps in the market.”

Launched in 2012, GrabTaxi is now in 20 cities across six countries: Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam. More than 75,000 taxis, cars and motorbikes are available on its regional network. GrabTaxi estimates there are seven bookings made through its app every second across the region.
