City Link court case

In their court case currently being held at Coventry Magistrates Court, three former directors of the failed courier firm City Link deny that they failed to inform the government about planned staff redundancies. UK companies have a statutory duty to give 45 days’ notice to the Secretary of State about potential job losses of 100 or more.

As previously reported, City Link went into administration on Christmas Eve (24 December) last year. The firm announced more than 2,300 job losses on New Year’s Eve and a further a 230 a week later. The prosecution has argued that the City Link could not “hide behind administrators” over its obligation to give notice.

The three men on trial are Robert Peto, Thomas Wright and David Smith.

Before its collapse, City Link had a fleet of more than 2,500 vehicles and more than 50 depots across the UK.
