Deliveroo unveils RooBox

Deliveroo, the on-demand delivery service for restaurant food has announced the launch of RooBox, its off-site delivery kitchen initiative. RooBox provides partner restaurants with the use of fully-equipped, off-site kitchens in areas where is high demand for delivery, but low restaurant supply.

In a statement sent to Post&Parcel this morning, Deliveroo explained the rationale behind the RooBox initiative: “Traditionally, expanding a restaurant business comes at significant risk, and substantial cost. Owners would need to make substantial commitments to a new site and its development. RooBox frees restaurant owners of this, enabling them to test locations through a delivery-only offering while simultaneously growing their customer base, revenue and brand in a new area.”

RooBox is initially launching in “select locations” across London. Two restaurants on the Deliveroo platform, Tommi’s Burger Joint and Yoobi Sushi, are already taking part.

Will Shu, CEO and co-founder of Deliveroo, said: “RooBox demonstrates everything we’re about as a business: other delivery companies might have expanded their delivery zones to achieve this increased supply, allowing their food to travel for longer. Instead we’ve taken a no compromise approach to quality, and brought the kitchens closer.”

Valgard Sorensen, the owner of Tommi’s Burger Joint, added: “RooBox offers our business a fantastic opportunity to promote itself in areas beyond our normal reach. We are able to offer a quality menu to a new market without the risks of committing to another location. We are looking to expand and RooBox has enabled us to test a local market and make informed business decisions.”

Siggi Gunnlaugsson, Head Chef of Tommi’s Burger Kitchen, said that using RooBox allowed the kitchen team to “focus specifically on cooking for delivery, without the additional work streams like house service”.
