Tesco ditching Deputy Manager role in convenience stores

The shake-up of the UK grocery sector continues, as Tesco announces that it will be doing away the Duty Manager role in its Express convenience stores. In a statement issued today (27 February), Tesco said that the new structure is “part of a wider programme of transformation to meet customer needs, which has been taking place over the last two years”.

Tracey Clements, Managing Director of Convenience at Tesco said: “To help improve our service to customers in our Express stores we are aiming to have more of our colleagues on the shop floor, more often. To help achieve this we are creating more than 3,300 Shift Leader roles which, in turn, means we will no longer have Deputy Managers. We appreciate that these changes will impact our Deputy Manager colleagues, and will do everything we can to support them throughout this period.”

Tesco currently operates more than 1,800 Express stores across the UK and it said that it will begin consultations this week with around 1,700 Deputy Managers, who “will be offered new Shift Leader positions or alternative roles in other Tesco stores”. On the up side, Tesco calculates that the changes “will result in a net increase of around 1,500 roles”.

The UK grocery and supermarket industry has, of course, been going through profound changes in order to adapt to the grow popularity of online shopping, the rise of Ocado and, more, recently, the arrival of Amazon’s Fresh and Prime services.
