Exel retains top position in UK contract logistics market

In a recent report examining the UK contract logistics industry, the UK-based research institute Transport Intelligence, has positioned Exel, the world leader in supply chain management, as the country’s leading logistics provider.

Based on revenue, the ‘UK Logistics Leaders 2003’ report provides analysis and profiling on top logistics companies and establishes a ranking list that has retained Exel in the number one spot.

Over recent years, Exel has also established itself as the leading contract logistics provider in the US and operates the third largest global freight forwarding business with operations in over 120 countries. The Group now employs over 67,000 people globally, with turnover of around GBP4.7bn.

John Dawson, Exel’s Director of Corporate Affairs, commented; “We are pleased that even in today’s tough operating environment, Exel is managing to provide well designed and operated supply chain solutions for our customers. As the survey confirms, this customer-focused approach is helping us consolidate our position as the UK’s leading solutions provider.”

The strengths of Exel’s integrated business proposition and the development of the Group’s “creating new value” initiative have been important components in this continued success. More and more of Exel’s business involves bringing together freight management skills with contract logistics expertise, underpinned by robust IT solutions.

“During the first quarter of 2003, Exel has made good progress in securing new business” added Dawson. “This reflected a particularly strong performance in contract logistics and has been helped by recent developments, including the award by Marks & Spencer of the management of seven of the retailers’ 11 general merchandise warehouses across the UK on a five-year contract.”

Exel’s contract logistics activities in the UK account for 26% of the Group’s turnover. Exel now works with leading companies across a wide range of industries including the automotive, chemical, consumer, retail, healthcare, industrial and technology sectors on an European and global basis.
