Irish express players broaden horizons

New PacTrac research data into the Irish parcels and express market, from Andrew Lester & Associates, shows how European postal operators are increasing their share of both the international and domestic sectors.
Internationally, of the estimated 1.8m express parcels dispatched annually, just seven brands make up 82% of the market, with DHL (26%) leading the way.

Postal authorities and their subsidiaries dominate, with An Post, SDS (An Post), DHL and Securicor Omega Express (Deutsche Post) and TNT (TPG) carrying almost 70% of traffic between them.

On the domestic front, of the estimated 6.9m parcels despatched annually by Irish international parcels and express shippers, the domestic post office brands (An Post & SDS) feature predictably strongly, together accounting for 47%. Securicor enjoys second position (14%), followed by Interlink Express (13%).

Apart from TNT (5%), no other major integrator has a significant presence.

The PacTrac Ireland programme is part of an ongoing study, also running in UK and France, based on 1,500 interviews with international parcels and express users covering the 12 months to February 2003.

Reports covering many aspects of the Irish market, such as destinations, transit time requirements, carrier loyalty and brand shares, may be purchased as a whole or by topic.

The programme continues in 2003 and will be extended to additional European countries.
