French post office takes anti-strike measures

The French post office (La Poste) has stressed that, apart from the one-day strike on May 13, relatively few of its 320,000 employees have so far participated in the general industrial action taken against the French government’s proposed reforms to the pensions system. La Poste, which says that it lost more than FFr1bn as a result of the 1995 pensions strike, is facing the additional challenge of the liberalised postal services market: since January 1, La Poste’s customers have been able to opt for other service providers in that area.
