FedEx moves Asia hub to China

FedEx will move its Asia-Pacific transport and distribution centre from the Philippines to Guangzhou, China, the Guangzhou Daily has reported. (1/5/2004)

According to FedEx, the lease of the eight-year-old Asia-Pacific hub in Subic Bay in the Philippines expires in 2007, and the runway and apron at Subic Bay have limited expansion room due to its deep water and hillside boundaries.

FedEx had also considered moving to the former Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines, now known as Diosdado Macapagal International Airport. However, the fact that China’s express mail market reached 139 million units in 2002, up from 1.5 million in 1998, may have influenced FedEx’s decision to relocate its Asia-Pacific hub to Guangzhou.

The new facility will be built at the new Baiyun airport (due to open in June this year), and will open between 2008 and 2012.

According to Guangzhou mayor, Zhang Guangning, this will create advantages for Guangzhou to build itself into a logistics centre.
