DHL starts work on new Chicago service centre

DHL has announced it has broken ground on a new, modernized service centre operation near O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, IL. DHL will invest USD 7 million in the new 78,960-sq.-ft facility, which will serve DHL’s local pickup, delivery and sorting operations. The new DHL Chicago service centre is expected to be operational by early 2007.

This is the second recent major facility investment by DHL to enhance operations in the Chicago area. In September 2005, DHL opened a new 70,000-sq.-ft facility on West Cermak Road serving the Chicago loop area and providing pickup and delivery services for DHL’s largest customers in the financial, legal, and banking industries. The new airport area facility will feature new, state-of-the-art conveyors and sorting systems to process a higher volume of customer shipments more quickly throughout the Chicagoland.

Deutsche Post says it will remain majority shareholder in Postbank

Deutsche Post AG plans to remain a majority shareholder in Deutsche Postbank AG for the forseeable future, a Deutsche Post spokesman said.

‘We intend to remain a majority shareholder in the forseeable future. (Chief executive) Mr (Klaus) Zumwinkel had said that in an interview over the weekend and I would like to reiterate that,’ the spokesman said.

The spokesman said he would not comment on German media ‘speculation’ that a number of banks were interested in buying Deutsche Post’s 50.1 pct stake in Postbank.

Die Welt newspaper, citing Deutsche Post sources, said that Unicredito Italiano SpA and Royal Bank of Scotland have both expressed an interest in the acquisition of Deutsche Post shareholdings in Postbank.

It said that Deutsche Post is not ready to sell its 50.1 pct interest in Germany’s largest retail bank but suggested it might do in the future.

Last week, German media suggested that Deutsche Bank AG was keen to buy Postbank.

Royal Mail 'is keeping secret way of avoiding junk post'

The Royal Mail is failing to give customers sufficient information on how to avoid receiving its junk mail deliveries, a consumer watchdog said yesterday.

The accusation follows the suspension of Roger Annies, a postman who told people on his round how they could stop receiving unsolicited letters and fliers.

“It should not be difficult for customers to opt out,” a spokesman for Postwatch said. “They have the choice. At the moment it is a little prohibitive.”

Royal Mail makes large profits from delivering fliers and letters addressed to “The Householder” or “The Occupier” and, although it says it offers all customers the opportunity to choose not to receive such mailshots, which are known as Door to Door items, the service is not publicised.

Postwatch said that the Door to Door opt-out service had changed its address several times and that customers still had to write a letter to make sure that their wishes were carried out, even after they had called a special number.

The service is also not advertised anywhere and no details could be found during a search of the company’s website.

Royal Mail said that the business mail sent through the Door to Door system was vital for the group’s ability to compete with its rivals.

TNT N.V. today announces that TPG Post will amend its rates on 1 January 2007. The rate for single-item domestic letters up to 20 grams will be increased to 44 euro cents. TPG Post intends not to increase the 44 euro cent rate again until 2010. The rate for letters has not risen since 2001. DHL Mexico releases its new air network, an investment of more than 200 million pesos.

DHL, the world’s leading express delivery and logistics company, announced all details concerning its new Air Network that will begin operations this week. The initial investment in 2005 was more than 140 million pesos. It is expected to increase to a total of 230 million pesos by 2007.

The decision to make this improvement is due in part, to the maintained volume growth that the company has registered within the last 15 months, which is more than 40 percent on shipments that require air routes.

With this evolution, DHL will fly about 3.1 million kilometers every year which add up to more than 6,200 flight hours. Annually, DHL will have the capacity to handle more than 4.8 million kilograms of packages; approximately 2 million kilograms more than the ones handled before the implementation of the new air network.

There will be 6 daily domestic flights, featuring new generation aircrafts. This will mean a great benefit for the clients who desire to make shipments from or towards the following destinations: Hermosillo, Ciudad Obregon, Ciudad de México, Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Monterrey, Villahermosa, San Luis Potosí, Mazatlan, La Paz, and Guadalajara.
