USPS-OIG implements WinBill for IT Expense Management

TeleManagement Technologies, Inc. (TTI) today announced that the United States Postal Service – Office of the Inspector General has begun to implement their WinBill IT expense management software system at their Arlington, VA. Headquarters. The USPS-OIG serves to prevent and detect fraud, waste and employee misconduct, and promote efficiency in the operations of the Postal Service.

Previously, USPS-OIG had been trying to manage their IT expenses in numerous spreadsheets. “I felt like I was constantly trying to figure out what spreadsheet had what information that I needed. It was a spreadsheet nightmare before we implemented WinBill,” said their Telecom Analyst.

After reviewing the many features and functionality of TTI’s WinBill system the IT group realized that they could eliminate their spreadsheets and import all of their inventory of services, billing information, contracts, vendors and budget information directly into WinBill.

Royal Mail Proposes Move to Zonal Pricing

Royal Mail has put forward a proposal to move to ‘Zonal Pricing’ from April 2007 for users of bulk mail accounts. If approved by Postcomm (Royal Mail’s Licence Regulator) the proposal will mean that the price of delivering an item of mail will vary according to where it is being delivered. Mail going to high density urban areas for instance, would cost less than mail going to low density remote areas.

In all, they propose five zones with discounts awarded to posters of mail to high density zones and surcharges made for deliveries to low density zones where delivery costs are higher than average.

The proposed changes apply to bulk mail services including Mailsort, Presstream and Walksort with the notable exception of Mailsort 1400 1st and 2nd class (which fall within the universal service obligation).

Rail service better

North American rail service improved in the second quarter and year over year, according to Bear Stearns’s quarterly survey of 1,000 shippers.

The survey respondents named CSX, Canadian National, and Canadian Pacific as having the most improved service.

Although 28 percent of the shippers still expect rail service to deteriorate during the peak season, this is down considerably from 53 percent a year ago.

Shippers expect to pay a 4.4-percent average rail rate increase in 2006, meaningfully up from 3.7 percent in the first quarter and 3.5 percent a year ago. Forty-four percent of the survey respondents described full-truckload capacity as “balanced;” 34 percent described the full-truckload market as “tight” and 22 percent as “over capacity.” For the first time since 2001, no respondent saw “extremely tight” capacity. The survey found shippers see even greater less-than-truckload capacity availability.

Qantas launches Freight business

Qantas today announced the formation of a new wholly owned subsidiary domestic air freight business, Express Freighters Australia, to commence operations from October 2006.

The Chief Executive Officer of Qantas, Mr Geoff Dixon, said Express Freighters Australia would wet lease B737-300 freighter aircraft to Australian air Express (AaE) under a 12-year contract.

“This is a new and exciting business that is about growth for the Qantas Group,” Mr Dixon said.

“Express Freighters Australia will not only provide increased revenue, but also new employment for pilots and additional work volumes for Qantas engineers.

“We will commence operations in October with one aircraft and four pilots, growing to four aircraft and up to 40 pilots by March 2007.”

Mr Dixon said Qantas Engineering had been contracted to carry out the conversion of the B737-300 aircraft for the new business at its Avalon base, as well as provide through-life maintenance support for the aircraft.

He said Express Freighters Australia had already employed pilots under Australian Workplace Agreements (AWAs) for the start up of the new business.

“The pilots’ AWAs have pay rates and conditions in line with industry standards for freighter pilots,” he said.

“Growing our freight operations is a core strategy for the Qantas Group, aimed at diversifying and strengthening our revenue base,” Mr Dixon said.

Hi-Tech ‘Track and Trace’ brings DJB to Palletforce

DJB Haulage, a transport company in BANES (Bath and North East Somerset), has joined the PalletFORCE palletised distribution network in order to enhance the range of services it can offer to its customers.

The decision to enter a pallet network was made after DJB acquired a transport company in March that had substantial pallet business. “It made sense to join a network and PalletFORCE impressed us the most,” explains the company’s David Buxton.

The key reason for choosing PalletFORCE is its innovative pinpoint IT system, which offers real-time ‘track and trace’ for all pallets. Designed by logistics specialist Trans-aXion, pinpoint registers every pallet with a unique identification, which customers can use to trace deliveries throughout the distribution process via the pinpoint website.

Deutsche Post receives certificate for quality management in customer service

Customer service’s quality management system in the MAIL division of Deutsche Post fulfills international standard requirements according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2000. That was now also certified to the company as the result of a successful certification procedure.

Costly audits and comprehensive documentation provided the basis of the certification performed by DNV Zertifizierung und Umweltgutachter GmbH. The certificate is valid for three years, during which the certifier reviews the quality management system once annually in the framework of a follow-up audit.

The task of customer service is to fulfill the wishes and requests of the customer, whether these are complaints, questions about products and services or order processing. This should be accomplished quickly and reliably with personal commitment and, last but not least, respectful, friendly and constructive interaction with customers. A quality management system is the foundation for consistently orientating all existing structures and processes toward the customer and the fulfillment of his or her wishes and requests. Weak spots are eliminated, organization gaps closed, and proven solutions systematized and further developed. With EASO (“excellent activities in service organization”), Deutsche Post’s own quality management system developed specifically for this, the company now has at its disposal a recognized foundation at the international level.

TNT wins Ikea catalogue distribution contract

TNT Post has won the GBP 2m-plus contract to distribute Ikea’s catalogues to UK households over the next year and will, for the first time, be the sole distributor.

TNT, which has worked with the furniture retailer since 1992, has always shared contracts with other distributors; it worked with a company called Deya in the last contract. It has been awarded sole supplier status following a lengthy tender process earlier this year.

The new edition of the catalogue is to go out to 13.3m households in the next month through TNT’s Solus doordrop service.

The service uses TNT’s Team Network, a national field force of 8,000 distributors, directed by more than 150 full-time area managers.
