China Post Airlines launch international cargo flight service

China Post Airlines launched its first international cargo flight service on Thursday, opening an air route from Beijing to Seoul in the Republic of Korea .

The airline, jointly owned by China Southern Airlines and China’s State Post Bureau (China Post), will extend its air routes to Europe and America as well as other countries in Asia when the time is ripe, the Xinhua-run Shanghai Securities News reported Friday.

Facing drastic competition at home from international delivery giants that have entered the Chinese express delivery market, the airline is trying to compete by entering the international cargo market, said the paper.

In line with its commitments to the World Trade Organization, China’s express delivery market was fully opened to competition in December last year. Now international delivery companies such as DHL, FedEx, TNT and UPS hold more than 60 percent of the domestic market.

The market share of China Post’s express mail service (EMS) has been shrinking, challenged not only by foreign players but also by private domestic companies, said the paper.

By April this year, private delivery services accounted for 80 percent of the country’s intracity express service and 50 percent of inter-provincial business.

In an effort to outrun its competitors, China Post last year introduced next-morning delivery and cross-region delivery, using overnight flights. China Post Airlines is the first domestic air company to fly overnight, the paper reported

TNT Express wins VOLVO Dubai Contract

TNT Express – the world’s leading B2B express delivery company – has unveiled a two-year contract with Volvo for transportation services from the automobile giant’s newly-built Regional Parts Distribution Centre (RPDC) in Dubai.

The distribution centre makes spare parts available to dealers of Volvo trucks, Mack trucks, Renault trucks, Volvo Construction Equipment and Volvo buses in 17 countries throughout the Middle East and Africa.

The link-up will see TNT responsible for transporting more than 1.1 million kilograms of spare parts annually from the Volvo RPDC, of which 90% will be moved through the company’s strategic Middle East Road Network (MERN).

“Key reasons for TNT’s success are its ability to meet and exceed Volvo’s transit time requirements and in offering competitive rates in the high volume trade lanes across the region,” said Darryl Regan, Regional Director for India, Middle East and Africa (IMEA).

DHL adds new Asia Pacific flights direct to New York

DHL, the express delivery and logistics company, today announced the introduction of five new direct overnight flights from key Asia Pacific markets directly into DHL’s International Gateway located at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The new flights will increase the air capacity of DHL’s global transportation network by eight tons daily, enhancing DHL’s ability to serve current and new customers along the fast-growing U.S.-Asia Pacific trade lane.

DHL’s new flights to New York’s JFK Airport consist of two daily direct flights from DHL’s Central Asia Hub in Hong Kong, and one direct flight each from DHL’s hubs in Bangkok, Thailand; Singapore; and Taipei, Taiwan.

In 2004, the Asia Pacific-U.S. trade lane accounted for USD 533 billion in exports to the U.S. The new direct DHL flights to New York significantly increase cargo capacity on air routes from Asia Pacific to the U.S. East coast to meet customer demand, and underscore DHL’s ongoing commitment to providing the most extensive international air express network for customers throughout Asia Pacific and the U.S. With the addition of these new flights, DHL customers will also benefit from enhanced next day express services to the U.S. using DHL International Document Service and DHL Worldwide Priority Express; later cut-off times, and earlier delivery times for shipments originating in Asia Pacific and destined for the greater New York/New Jersey area.

The mail and the Net U.S. Postal Service gets an online boost

At a recent conference that attracted 15,000 eBay enthusiasts to Las Vegas, the main sponsor was a big advocate of online shopping: the U.S. Postal Service.

Yet the Internet is actually injecting new life, and sorely needed revenue, into the Postal Service. And it is happening with packages, millions of them shipped every day, in a journey that starts with a few mouse clicks and ends days later at a customer’s door.
In 2005, revenue from first-class mail like cards and letters, which still made up more than half the Postal Service’s total sales of USD 66.6 billion, dropped nearly 1 percent from 2004. But revenue from packages helped make up for much of that drop, rising 2.8 percent to USD 8.6 billion last year, as it handled nearly three billion packages.
It is impossible to say how many of these were online orders, but Postal Service officials give e-commerce a lot of credit.
