Postcomm today published its Competitive Market Review: 2005, which includes the results of a survey of 1,200 postal users. Speaking at the Mail Show in London today, Postcomm chairman Nigel Stapleton said that, since the market was first opened to limited competition nearly 30 months ago, Royal Mail’s rivals had won just over 1.5% of the letters market. “Customers tell us that this is already encouraging Royal Mail to be more responsive to their needs and offer more choice and innovation in postal services,” said Mr Stapleton. “But the development of a fully competitive market is still at a very early stage. By its own calculations, Royal Mail will still have nearly 90% of the market in 2010,” he added.

Its on-time overnight delivery of First-Class Mail earned a 95 percent performance score as measured independently by IBM Consulting Services and announced today during the agency’s Board of Governors meeting in Washington, D.C. This accomplishment marks the 11th consecutive measurement period in which the organization has scored 95 percent or better for on-time overnight delivery of First-Class Mail.
Read MoreMinister for Communications Noel Dempsey will today resume attempts to broker talks in the An Post dispute, as Friday’s strike deadline looms with attitudes on both sides hardening. The Minister has cancelled a five-day trip to Washington so that he can continue trying to persuade union leaders and management to meet under his chairmanship or that of an agreed third party.
But union leaders declined an invitation to talks on Friday last and there was no sign over the weekend of a compromise emerging. The Communication Workers Union’s (CWU) two-week strike notice expires at midnight on Thursday, when some form of industrial action – probably a series of limited regional work stoppages to begin with – now seems likely. The union said action on Friday was a “strong possibility”.
From October 2005 onwards, General Logistics Systems B.V., Amsterdam (GLS), is introducing approximately 18,000 new mobile terminals with scan function and 5,000 scan stations throughout Europe. “In cooperation with IBM and Symbol Technologies we have developed a special technology that offers customers advantages for parcel and express shipments that are unique in the market”, says Rico Back, CEO of General Logistics Systems B.V., Amsterdam (GLS). The technology will be introduced gradually. GLS is investing approximately 20 million euros.
