Deutsche Post chairman expects profts in US in 2005

Klaus Zumwinkel said he expects the company’s U.S. operations to begin turning a profit in 2005. During a meeting with The Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires, Zumwinkel said the German mail and parcel company doesn’t have to boost its market share any further in the U.S. to turn a profit.

UPS Once Again “World’s Most Admired”

UPS once again has been rated the “World’s Most Admired” company in its industry in a Fortune magazine survey, and also ranked in the Top 10 among the world’s companies on all nine of the attributes evaluated. The recognition marks the sixth consecutive time UPS has been ranked the “World’s Most Admired” in its industry by Fortune. It follows a similar ranking announced earlier this week in which UPS was rated “America’s Most Admired” company in its industry for the 21st consecutive year.

UPS supply chain solutions named “Company Of The Year”

UPS Supply Chain Solutions, a business unit of UPS, has been named “Company of the Year” by The Traffic Club of New York for its leadership in the logistics and transportation industries.

“UPS Supply Chain Solutions has made a lasting impression on the logistics community as it has been instrumental in moving our industry forward,” said Kevin Murphy, the club’s president. “This award is a fitting tribute to the accomplishments it has made and to where it is leading the logistics and transportation industries.”

FedEx Honored As One of the World’s Most Admired Companies

FedEx Corp. was honored today as one of the Top 10 most admired companies in the world by Fortune magazine. It is the company’s third consecutive year to finish in the Top 10 on Fortune’s “Global Most Admired” list, and follows FORTUNE’s recognition of FedEx as one of the Top-10 “America’s Most Admired” companies last week for the third consecutive year. Earlier this month, FedEx was rated seventh, its highest-ever ranking, in the Harris Interactive/ Reputation Institute’s annual corporate reputation survey published in The Wall Street Journal. FedEx is one of the only companies to rank this highly in all three reputation surveys and the only transportation company to be included in the Top 10 in all three reputation surveys.

Swiss Postal workers protest

Postal workers in Bern, Zurich, Basel and other Swiss cities and towns are staging a protest action on Friday. They are demonstrating against a major cost-cutting programme and plans to scrap their collective labour contract. A two-hour work stoppage will also take place in Geneva, Lausanne, Biel, Lucerne, St Gallen and in canton Ticino. The Communications Union claims changes planned by Swiss Post to the collective work contract will lead to increased hours, lower wages and the dismantling of a public service.

USPS seeks anti-terrorism funds

Postmaster General John Potter appealed to Congress to provide anti-terrorism funds the Bush administration failed to include in its budget for next year. Potter asked for USD779 million to help the agency buy and install systems to detect biological agents and poisons, and new ventilation and filtration systems, in 282 mail handling centers across the country.
