US review of air ownership case to be secret

A government case testing U.S. airline ownership limits that was prompted by complaints from UPS and FedEx has become so bitter and entangled that a judge is taking the matter behind closed doors, officials said on Monday.
Transportation Department Administrative Law Judge Ronnie Yoder has ordered that the Aug. 19 hearing on the ownership structure of Astar Air Cargo, formerly DHL Airways, be conducted in secret. A preconference hearing to set out a schedule for evidence and testimony for the upcoming proceeding will be held on Wednesday and will be open to the public, according to Yoder’s order issued late on Friday.

Talks to be held in postal dispute

Crucial talks aimed at averting the first national strike by postal workers in seven years will be held tomorrow. Leaders of the Communications Workers Union will meet Royal Mail managers at the conciliation service Acas in a bid to resolve a row over pay. The union has accused the Royal Mail of being “dishonest” by claiming that the latest offer was worth 14.5% over 18 months. The Royal Mail, which is losing GBP750,000 a day, insisted that the offer was worth 14.5% although it was linked to some productivity changes. Some of the extra money is tied to the introduction of single mail deliveries.

Postal Union leader receives 23% pay rise

The left-wing postal union leader behind calls for a national strike has received a 23% rise in his annual pay – 10 times the rate for the postmen he represents.

The increase for Billy Hayes, 40, a former postman from Liverpool who is now general secretary of the Communication Workers Union, is worth an extra £13,461 a year, more than the average annual pay of a postal delivery worker.

His latest pay packet, which has emerged in newly released accounts, rose to £72,210 in 2002. Hayes’s total package was worth £115,000 because the union also paid more than £40,000 into his pension.

His new deputy, Dave Ward, is also thought to be receiving a package worth more than £100,000, prompting accusations that the pair are benefiting from the very “fat cat” pay packages that their union has publicly disparaged.

Hayes claimed not to know how much he was paid, though the union files details to a government department. “I can’t remember but I didn’t think it was that much,” he said. Ward was unavailable for comment.
