UK post chief criticised for Highland threat

The regulator for the UK’s postal service yesterday accused the head of the Royal Mail of “holding customers hostage” following a warning that the Highlands’ postal service may be scrapped. Martin Stanley, chief executive of Postcomm, said that comments made last week by Allan Leighton, chairman of the Royal Mail, threatening to increase the isolation of remote communities, were “inexcusable”. In an open letter, Mr Stanley said that any failure to deliver a full postal service to the Highlands area would be met with “vigorous enforcement action by Postcomm”.

DHL explores Senai Airport, Malaysia as a possible base

DHL Worldwide Express is exploring the possibility of setting up shop at Senai Airport in the southern Malaysian state of Johor. ‘They have approached us but it is purely exploratory,’ according to Yasmin Aladad Khan, general manager of DHL in Malaysia. DHL joins a growing list of express package delivery companies that have been approached by Senai Airport Terminal Services (Sats), which is in the midst of taking over the small Malaysian airport located north of Changi International Airport in Singapore.

Stephen Flowers Named To Lead UPS Americas; Jovita Carranza Moving To Air Operations

Stephen Flowers, a veteran UPS manager with wide international experience, is the new president of the UPS Americas Region, which includes more than 50 countries and territories in Latin America and the Caribbean. Flowers, 41, moves to the Americas headquarters in Miami where he will succeed Jovita Carranza, who will become the vice president of UPS air operations in Louisville, Ky. Carranza is replacing John J. McDevitt, who last week was promoted to UPS’s Management Committee, the group of most senior managers who direct the corporation’s business affairs.

Bill to freeze US postal rates for three years passes Congress

Americans will be spared another rise in the price of stamps for three years under legislation en route to President Bush for signature into law. The legislation takes advantage of a discovery that the money-losing post office was paying far too much into the Civil Service Retirement System, a program that covers employees who joined the force before 1984. The bill, which passed the House 424-0 on Tuesday, allows the Postal Service to correct its payment formula, but under the condition that the savings be used to pay off the agency’s debts and to stop any further rate increases until at least 2006. The bill passed the Senate last week.

Building a global logistics leader – Deutsche Post’s acquisition strategy

Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN) has announced the acquisition of two further companies to add to its long list of purchases: Securicor Omega Holdings in the UK (logistics and express) and Airborne Express in the USA (ground parcel network). The company already owned 50% (although did not have management control) of Securicor Omega and had initially negotiated an option to buy the remaining shares in 2005. However in order to integrate the company into its European network more rapidly DPWN decided to buy Securicor Omega outright two years ahead of schedule.

Vicki Bretthauer to President and Chief Operating Officer, Ray Lutz to Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Planning, Steve Rossum to Executive Vice President-General Counsel and Head of Business Transactions and Phil Wegescheide to Vice President-Finance and Controller.

Posten Sweden announces new chairman and new CEO

Posten, Sweden’s national postal service, today announced that Marianne Nivert has been named the new chairman of Posten. Effective May 1, 2003, Erik Olsson is the new President and CEO of Posten. Claes Ånstrand will step down as chairman of Posten at the Annual General Meeting on April 25, 2003. The Annual General Meeting will appoint Telia’s former CEO, Marianne Nivert, as the company’s new chairman. Ms. Nivert joined Posten’s board in December 2002.
