Stephen Flowers Named To Lead UPS Americas; Jovita Carranza Moving To Air Operations

Stephen Flowers, a veteran UPS manager with wide international experience, is the new president of the UPS Americas Region, which includes more than 50 countries and territories in Latin America and the Caribbean.
UPS is the largest air cargo and express carrier serving Latin America, delivering to every address in the region.

Flowers, 41, moves to the Americas headquarters in Miami where he will succeed Jovita Carranza, who will become the vice president of UPS air operations in Louisville, Ky. Carranza is replacing John J. McDevitt, who last week was promoted to UPS’s Management Committee, the group of most senior managers who direct the corporation’s business affairs.

Flowers has been based in Paris since 2000, overseeing the company’s operations in a West Europe District that includes France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Switzerland. There, he helped the UPS Europe region post a nearly 15% increase in export volume in 2002 compared to the prior year.

The personnel moves were announced today by Dave Abney, president of UPS International, and UPS Chairman and CEO Mike Eskew.

“Steve brings a unique combination of great management skills, thorough knowledge of our international operations and business development abilities that will help UPS grow throughout the Americas region,” said Abney.

A native of Canada, Flowers began his UPS career in 1981 working in operations in his home country. After completing his college degree in business administration, he became a package car driver before being promoted to industrial engineering supervisor just nine months later. From 1984 to 1996, Flowers held various positions ranging from operations manager to vice president of operations for Canada. In 1998, he became vice president of international strategic planning before moving to his post in Europe.

Carranza, the highest-ranking Hispanic female executive at UPS, has headed the Americas Region since June 2000. In Louisville, she will manage the ground operations that support the UPS Airline, including the new UPS Worldport(SM). That 4 million-square-foot building is considered the most advanced sorting facility in the world as well as the nerve center of UPS’s international air operations.

Carranza, 53, began working at UPS in 1976 in Los Angeles and has served the company in a variety of roles ranging from human resources manager in Texas to District manager of Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

UPS is the world’s largest package delivery company and a global leader in supply chain services, offering an extensive range of options for synchronizing the movement of goods, information and funds. Headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., UPS serves more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. UPS's stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange (UPS), and the company can be found on the Web at UPS.com.
