Austria’s post office for sale

The Austrian government has authorised the partial privatisation of the national postal service, ostereichische post. Up to 74.9% is to be sold to foreign partners. The rest will remain in the government’s hands. The leading candidate for the majority stake is thought to be deutsche post, but the Swiss, the French and Swedish postal groups have also signalled their interest. According to sources in Vienna, the sale of blocks of shares (valued approximately EUR 1.5-EUR 2 billion) could commence this year or 2004 at the latest.

Japanese Govt approves postal guidelines

The Public Management Ministry on Wednesday approved an interim management plan and goals governing the business guidelines for Japan Post, which will go into operation on April 1, and announced a set of guidelines for the definition of confidential mail articles to be handled exclusively by the new public corporation. Japan Post will be established as a public corporation replacing the Postal Services Agency.

Postcomm halts enforcement process on postcode performance after new information from UK Royal Mail

After receiving new information from Royal Mail, and details of a strengthened audit procedure, Postcomm has decided not to issue a Final Order in relation to Royal Mail’s quality of service within individual postcodes. Postcomm issued notice of its intent to make a Final Order on 7 February after figures provided by Royal Mail indicated that the company was not likely to achieve the targets which require all individual postcodes to deliver 90% of first class post next day in February/March 2003. New information provided by Royal Mail, and confirmed by Postwatch and its auditors, Deloitte and Touche, shows the Royal Mail’s service quality is significantly better than it originally reported.

Bibby Distribution has announced 2 new contract wins for its Route One business. London Pottery has contracted the firm to transport ceramic and stainless steel products from its site in Wimbledon, south London to retailers including Harrods and the John Lewis group.

UPS attacks airborne deal

United Parcel Service accused Deutsche Post of further violating foreign ownership laws after the German postal operator struck a deal to buy Seattle-based Airborne’s ground operations for $1.05bn. The complaint, filed with the Department of Transportation, calls for further widening a federal examination into whether Deutsche Post is flouting laws forbidding foreign companies from owning more than 25 per cent of US airlines. UPS claims Deutsche Post is in direct control of Chicago-based DHL Airways, a cargo carrier, via its subsidiary, DHL Worldwide.
