Seur Portugal Sees 14 Pct Y/Y Turnover Increase 2003

Seur Portugal, the local unit of Spanish express courier company Seur, expects to generate a turnover for 2003 up by 14 pct from 22.6 mln euro ($24.6 mln) for 2002, company’s general director Roberto Abarca said on March 13, 2003.

Seur Portugal’s target in terms of turnover confirms the accent on the Portuguese market and the expansion strategy of the Spanish company on the international market, Abarca said. In the Portuguese market, which currently accounts for nearly 5.0 pct of Seur’s annual turnover, Seur Portugal will invest 20.8 mln euro ($22.6 mln), of which 19.2 mln euro ($20.9 mln) in the development of its activities.

China post cranks up logistics ops

China’s State Postal Bureau said it will spend 100 million yuan ($12 million) this year to improve its fledgling logistics network.

Li Xiong, manager of the logistics subsidiary of the postal agency, said it recently signed service contracts with seven domestic and multinational companies. They weren’t identified.

China’s postal monopoly has struggled with heavy debt since the government split it and the profit-making telecommunications sectors into two independent units in 1999.

New Postal entity eyeing 20% cut in mail service costs in Tokyo

A postal public corporation to be established next month will promote efficient mail services with an eye toward achieving a 20% cost reduction, three top executives of the new entity said Thursday.

“While the state-run postal services lack cost-consciousness, we can realize a 20% cut in mail service costs,” said Toshihiro Takahashi, a former managing director of Toyota Motor Corp. who will become a deputy chief of the postal corporation, Japan Post.

UK Royal Mail defers stamp price increase

Royal Mail has had to defer stamp price increases due to Postcomm extending the consultation time over price controls. Royal mail’s strategy on price increases may be out of step at a time when successful competition is all about customer satisfaction and fulfillment.

Royal Mail has postponed a price increase on first and second-class stamps until next month. This follows UK postal regulator Postcomm’s decision to extend the consultation period for price control until March 21. Royal Mail hoped to increase basic first class postage to 28p and second class to 20p on April 17. This would generate an additional GBP170 million – money that should be used to aid the desperately needed and long overdue restructuring of the company.

Japan's Mitsui teams up with China Postal unit in mail delivery

Japan’s Mitsui & Co. yesterday formed a comprehensive partnership with a distribution subsidiary of China’s postal agency.

Mitsui and the subsidiary will begin providing small-lot delivery services to corporate clients in China as early as within the year.

They aim to secure orders mainly from Japanese manufacturers operating in that country.

Spanish Redur Posts 80.12 Mln Euro Turnover 2002

Spanish logistics company Grupo Redur posted a turnover of 80.12 mln euro ($88.33 mln) for 2002, up 15 pct year-on-year, it was reported on March 11, 2003.

The company attributed the increase in turnover to the boost of logistics and warehousing facilities of Redur.
