Probe into high parcel posting costs for north UK

A charging structure discriminating against consumers in the Highlands and Islands is to be reviewed by Parcelforce.

The Royal Mail Group business said yesterday the review would assess the distribution network and zonal pricing system which splits the UK into three different charging areas, including one specifically for the Highlands and Islands.

The other zone covers England, Wales and parts of Scotland, while the third area takes in Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and Scilly Isles.

Amount of correspondence in Latvia grows

The state-owned Latvijas Pasts (Latvian Mail) company last year processed over 58 million letters, up by 5 million or 9 percent from 2001, said the mail service transportation director Agris Timma.

Most of the letters handled by Latvijas Pasts in 2002 were local mail — nearly 50 million letters as opposed to 45 million in 2001.

France's La Poste sees 2003 sales 15.515Bln Eur, UP 3.5%

France’s state-owned postal service La Poste said it expects 2003 sales to rise 3.5 pct to 15.515 bln eur, following the approval of its 2003 budget earlier today.

The company also said it expects to break even at the operating level in 2003, while pretax profit is expected to be over 100 mln eur.

Deutsche Post says queried by German cartel authorities

German postal giant Deutsche Post DPWGn.DE said on Monday the German cartel authorities were looking into complaints that new contracts with some of its agencies broke competition laws.
A Deutsche Post spokesman said the group had been approached by the German cartel office about the complaints and the company had until the end of March to give a formal reply. The group has about 7,000 private agencies like bakeries or grocery stores that also sell postal products, he said.
