UPS consolidate customs clearance service

United Parcel Service has introduced a new service that combines global express delivery with consolidated customs clearance.

UPS said the service, UPS World Ease, would enable customers to ship multiple packages to many destinations in the same country as a single shipment.

This allows goods to move directly through customs as a single unit, reducing the need for warehousing, inventory and shipping, UPS said.

Royal Mail cuts 100 jobs in sales and marketing

The Royal Mail is to axe 20 per cent of its marketing and sales staff, resulting in the loss of 100 jobs.

The new Royal Mail marketing structure will have 300 marketing staff and around 100 sales and customer services staff, following job cuts across both areas. Royal Mail aims to shed the jobs by redeploying staff or through voluntary redundancies.

Lemuir Group and Danzas join in new venture

The Lemuir Group, India’s leading freight forwarding and logistics service providing company, and Danzas, the logistics subsidiary of Deutsche Post World Net, have joined hands and floated a new India-based entity called Danzas Lemuir Pvt Ltd.

In the new company, the Lemuir Group holds the majority 51 per cent stake while Danzas the balance 49 per cent.

Mr Snehal Parikh, Managing Director of Lemuir Group, will be the Chairman of the joint venture and Mr T. Menezes from Danzas, the Chief Executive Officer.

According to the Japanese paper ‘Nihon Keizai’, UPS is planning an important
extension of its own network in Japan. The paper reports that the integrator intends to create up to 30% more jobs in Japan next year.

DHL merger with Danzas illegal

The merger between DHL, the international courier company with the Deutche Post Euro Express and Danzas will not be allowed in Zambia until the two firms seek authorisation from the Zambia Competition Commission (ZCC).

ZCC chairman George Lipimile said in an interview yesterday, that as far as the commission was concerned the merger was not recognised locally and that it would be illegal in Zambia.

Paced by record international performance, UPS today reported solid gains in both revenue and net income for the fourth quarter.

The quarter also saw several non-recurring items, the most notable of which involved the final settlement of a tax dispute with the Internal Revenue Service.

La Poste CEO presents 5-year plan

The French La Poste’s CEO, Mr Jean-Paul Bailly has presented his company’s 5-year strategy plan, which comprises stronger partnerships with other European post companies and with one or several globally active service providers, the completion of La Poste’s own European network as well as investments in new parcel and express transshipment centres.

Speaking in Paris, Mr Bailly said that La Poste’s focus over the coming years would be on the core business segments letters, parcels and express.

Mr Bailly clearly rejected speculations about La Poste venturing into the logistics sector. The strategy document states that ‘the massive injections of capital required, even for limited expansion, are today out of La Poste’s reach’. As a next step the company is now set to develop an action plan by this coming summer for the implementation of the strategy.
