Spain-Tir Starts 25 Mln Euro Investment Plan

Spanish freight forwarding and logistics group Spain-Tir has started a 25 mln euro ($27 mln) investment plan to enlarge its branches in Barcelona and Madrid, Spain-Tir’s chairman, Lluis Gay, said.

The 7.82 mln euro ($8.47 mln) enlargement of the Barcelona branch will be completed in June 2003.

Postal rivals call for VAT on Royal Mail

Royal Mail’s rivals are considering making a formal complaint to the Competition Authority in Brussels which could lead to VAT being put on bulk business mail and parcel delivery. Representatives from Business Post, Dutch postal operator TPG and Hays DX held a meeting in Brussels earlier this month to argue that the current legislation, which exempts Royal Mail from charging VAT, gives it an unfair advantage.

Royal Mail to release universal stamps

Royal Mail is launching two new airmail stamps on March 27, for items up to 40g – blue for European destinations and red for any other destination worldwide. These self-adhesive “Universal Stamps” will be available in books of four from Post Offices and other retailers, priced Pounds 2.12 (4 x 53p) for European and Pounds 4.48 (4 x Pounds 1.12) for worldwide. The design utilises the Machin head of the Queen on a white background, with airmail chevrons, reminiscent of a barber’s pole, running down the right-hand edge. A special first-day cover and presentation pack will also be available.

O'Neill leads UK Post Office benefits rebellion

Martin O’Neill, the Labour chairman of the powerful Commons Trade and Industry Select Committee, is leading a backbench revolt over the Government’s decision to phase out benefit payments through post offices.

Mr O’Neill has put down an early day motion calling on ministers to ensure that there is a level playing field when claimants come to decide whether to continue drawing their benefits using a Post Office card account or have them paid direct into bank accounts.
