Commission to review US Post Office

The postal system, whose last overhaul was in the 1970s, could face major changes in the future as its mission and operations come under review from a commission set up Wednesday by President Bush.

The U.S. Postal Service is in tough competition from private companies and technology, including electronic commerce and e-mail, over the Internet.

The commission will consider ways to make the postal system more efficient and financially viable. A report, including recommendations, must go to the president by July 31.

Slovenska Posta expects gross profit of SKK 260M in 2002

State-owned postal service company Slovenska Posta plans to close this year with gross earnings of SKK 260 million on revenues and expenditures in the range of about SKK 6 billion, finance director Jiri Vacek told a news conference on Wednesday. The estimate is based on results for the first ten months. As of October 31, Slovenska Posta reported revenues of SKK 4.95 billion, expenditures of SKK 4.54 billion and gross earnings at SKK 410 million. End-year results will be influenced by Christmas output, expenditures related to the annual financial statement and chiefly by end-year bonus payments to employees, since wage costs make up more than 60 percent of Slovenska Posta’s expenditures, said Mr. Vacek.

The planned introduction of 20-percent VAT on postal services will only apply to supplementary services beyond the universal service framework. However, consignments up to 2 kg, parcels up to 10 kg and express mail, defined as universal service, are free from VAT.

NAA encouraged by commission to examine U.S. Postal Service

The announcement today that an independent presidential commission of national leaders has been appointed to examine the operations of the U.S. Postal Service and make recommendations for its future was greeted with enthusiasm by the Newspaper Association of America.

“By establishing this commission, the president has taken a big step in restoring public confidence and accountability in a postal system that, in some respects, has lost its way,” commented NAA President and CEO John F. Sturm. “NAA has long been calling for the creation of such a commission to take a hard look at the service now and for the future, and we are encouraged by the president’s action today.

DMA applauds creation of presidential postal reform commission

The Direct Marketing Association (The DMA) today applauded the Administration’s empanelling of a commission to study the role of the United States Postal Service (USPS) in the 21st century.

“We are pleased that the President is now engaged on the critical issue of postal reform,” said H. Robert Wientzen, president & CEO, The DMA.

Wientzen had written the President earlier this year requesting the creation of a commission to examine the financial and structural underpinnings of the USPS after legislative reform efforts reached an impasse.

“The commission should focus on constructive recommendations that will guarantee the continued viability of the Postal Service, which is a vital cog in our nation’s economy,” said Wientzen.

Demise of EG couriers brings some respite to fighting companies

The demise of EG couriers has bought respite to some companies fighting it out in a tough industry

The German courier industry has been shaken up by the recent failing of one of its better-regarded operators, EG Courier. The decision by the banks to foreclose on the operation has meant that a substantial volume of business has become available to its competitors that have so far survived the current turbulence in the market. Carsten Daniels, general manager international at GDSK, says he has seen business grow by 35-40 percent since the beginning of October, when EG was shut down.
