Hungary to Jump-Start Post Privatization

A new market-friendly, centre-left government and changes at the top of state agency APV are expected to give fresh impetus to Hungary’s stalled privatisation programme. This, in turn, should bring fresh blood to Budapest’s moribund stock market and put Hungary back on the map for foreign investors who have switched to other countries in the region as they gear up to join the European Union. Miklos Kamaras, newly appointed Managing Director at APV, the body charged with holding state assets, said on Wednesday he was working closely with the new coalition of Socialists and liberal Free Democrats to jumpstart state sell-offs.

Royal Mail back door postal charges rapped

BUSINESSMAN Andy Loynes today blasted the Royal Mail for slapping a 20 per cent increase on the price of pre-paid envelopes, which are popular with small firms.
The controversy comes just weeks after postal chiefs unveiled plans to charge companies £14 a week for early deliveries. They later announced a re-think, following protests.
Now Consignia, the Royal Mail’s owner, has enraged small business bosses by raising the cost of packets of 100 pre-paid envelopes from £29.60 to £35.50.

DPWN Must Reduce Postal Rates by January

The German post and telecommunications regulator has ruled that Deutsche Post, the German national postal service operator, must reduce postage charges for letters weighing up to 200 grams and for postcards with effect from 1 January 2003. This follows a decision by the regulator that the company must reduce charges in all areas of activity in which it has a monopoly by a total of 7.2 per cent by 2007. The company also has monopolies in printed and advertising material. Deutsche Post intends to present its proposed new tariffs to the regulator by mid-August, and the regulator will then examine these over a two-week period. Martin Hellwig, chairman of the German monopolies commission, believes that the reduction planned is too little, and recommends a cut by up to 63 per cent.”

Mailers Council supports bill calling for presidential commission on the postal service

The Mailers Council, the nation’s largest coalition of mailers and mailing associations, today urged the Senate to pass S 2754, a bill that calls on the White House to create a presidential commission to evaluate the financially-ailing United States Postal Service (USPS).

Introduced by Senator Susan M. Collins (R-ME), S 2754 calls for the president to create an 11-member commission. To ensure the commission’s independence, the bill would prohibit any postal stakeholders–employees, managers or competitors–from being commission members.

Recognizing the need to ensure that employee concerns are duly considered, the bill would require that at least one commissioner be a union representative (but not one representing postal employees or competitors).
