Correos, the Spanish postal group, yesterday announced the purchase of 100 per cent of Servipack, the express parcels company, from Vista Capital, the venture capital company in which Royal Bank of Scotland and SCH, the British and Spanish banks respectively, have stakes. Chronoexpres, the express delivery division of Correos, will absorb the acquisition. Following the operation, Correos will increase its stake in Chronoexpres from 57 to 74.23 per cent. The French post office will hold the remaining shares. The amount of the operation has not been officially announced, but it could be in excess of 40m euros.

TPG E-Postbox service makes headway

Privver, the Royal TPG Post subsidiary in Holland, says its consumer-bent digital letterbox service is gaining momentum.
Privver executives say 13 billers and other mailers are currently sending out e-bills, statements and other documents through the PrivverConsolidator service, which debuted in December.
Some 100,000 consumers are reportedly registered for the service. “We’re growing and growing,” boasts Privver managing director Arthur van Veen.
Biller/senders should hit 15-18 by the end of the year. Privver’s service is free to consumers but companies pay a fee to send their bills, statements, payment confirmations, newsletters and direct mail. Besides a monthly maintenance fee of 2,000 euros and a one-time set-up fee of about 50,000 euros, biller/mailers pay 30 euro cents to send out each document. The Privver system is permission-based; the consumer decides what mail he wants to get electronically and from whom.

Diet passes bills enabling private postal delivery

The Diet on Wednesday enacted a set of bills to turn the Postal Services Agency into a state-run corporation and allow private firms to enter the mail delivery business.
The bills cleared the House of Councillors at a plenary session with the backing of the three ruling coalition parties — the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), New Komeito and New Conservative Party — and some other parties.
They had cleared the House of Representatives on July 9, and with the day’s passage through the upper house, they will take effect next April 1.

Deutsche Post will show loss

Deutsche Post World Net said it will show a net loss for the second quarter after it set aside €850 million ($833 million) to cover the repayment of illegal state subsidies.
Industry analysts pegged the loss at between $196-294 million for the quarter.
Deutsche Post set aside the “special reserve” after the European Union in June ordered it to repay $543 million to the German government after finding that DP used profits from its domestic mail monopoly to subsidize its unprofitable parcel delivery unit.
Deutsche Post will release earnings results on Wednesday.

Regulator confirms price cuts in postal service that Deutsche Post warns could cost thousands of jobs

German regulators said Monday they will go ahead with price cuts in the postal service that Deutsche Post says may force it to cut 10,000 jobs and shutter 1,000 post offices.
Post and telecoms regulator RegTP confirmed the plans after allowing a little more than two weeks for consultations with affected parties. The price cap covers the period running up to the end of Deutsche Post’s monopoly on letter delivery in 2007.
Deutsche Post declined to comment on the decision ahead of a news conference Wednesday, when it will present its first-half earnings. But chief executive Klaus Zumwinkel warned earlier this month that the price curbs could spark drastic cuts elsewhere.

3,000 Post Offices to close over three years

Four urban post offices are set to close every working day over the next three years under plans to revamp the ailing network.
The sweeping programme will start in January, according to David Mills, chief executive of the Post Office network, who has revealed the rate of closures for the first time.
He told the Financial Times that the scheme to close 3,000 urban branches – a third of the urban network – would start next year at a rate of 1,000 closures a year until the end of 2005.

Deutsche Postman gives us the mail

DEUTSCHE Post chairman Klaus Knappik says he believes Australia offers the best growth potential in Asia Pacific.
Deutsche Post has transformed from a mail-delivery service to a business consultancy providing market intelligence, databases of potential customers and production of marketing brochures.
Although the market is relatively small, Mr Knappik, who visited Sydney last week, said the world’s second-largest mail operator offered Australian customers value-added services, such as direct marketing overseas.
“The world market place is getting bigger, and companies in Australia which never thought they would ever enter foreign markets may have the opportunity to do so now,” he said.
In the past, they would probably need an office overseas, he said. But nowadays operators like Deutsche Post could organise mail shots in countries far away.

French La Poste and Swedish Posten AB companies will jointly develop the Polish courier company Masterlink Express

In line with the agreement signed in July, La Poste Group took over a 50-percent stake in Masterlink Express from Posten AB, its to-date sole shareholder. At the same time, Posten AB bought a license for Polish operations from Direct Parcel Distribution, one of the largest logistics groups in Europe. As a result, Masterlink will gain access to the chain covering 24 European countries.
Thanks to the change in the ownership structure, Masterlink will become part of Europe’s second-largest logistics group. As a member of the large multinational chain, Masterlink will be able to transfer know-how and improve its service line.
