Consignia delays pounds 1bn deal to avoid a strike

Consignia has offered to delay a pounds 1bn plan to part-privatise its facilities department by three months in an attempt to see off a national postal strike.
The proposal was made at a heated meeting with Communication Workers Union (CWU) officials on Thursday, hours before the union was due to ballot its members on industrial action.
But it is understood the union has given the postal group a two-week ultimatum to agree to concessions before it asks its 180,000 Consignia members to vote on a series of one-day walkouts.
Consignia, chaired by Allan Leighton, wants to transfer 7,000 postal workers to a new company, 49 per cent owned by construction company Balfour Beatty.

Few takers for pensions sold at post offices

A much-trumpeted initiative that saw the Post Office marketing stakeholder pensions throughout its branch network on behalf of Standard Life has spluttered to a halt, with just 2,000 sold in the past 15 months.
The figures show the life assurer sold an average of one pension for every nine branches of the Post Office’s 18,000-strong network.
Most sales took place in the weeks immediately after the launch of stakeholder pensions in April last year. It is understood that new sales throughout the entire UK post office network are now running at barely a dozen or so each week.

Cycling team gets millions in postal funds

In July I am captivated by bicycle racing, specifically the Tour de France. I am in awe of athletes who can perform at that level in a three-week endurance test over more than 3,000 kilometers, and I have come to appreciate the strategy, planning and subtle skills demanded by a sport where individuals excel but can’t win without their team.
.
Competing in the Tour de France has been compared to running 20 marathons in 20 days. If the Tour is not the most grueling, most demanding athletic event in the world, what is?
.
On top of which, the saga of Lance Armstrong is one of the most incredible and thrilling stories in all of sports – and perhaps in all of life. Armstrong, who is on the verge of winning his fourth consecutive Tour de France, recovered from a metastasized cancer that kills two-thirds of patients within a year to become probably the greatest bicycle racer ever.
.
But there is one thing I don’t understand: How come the U.S. Postal Service (that is, the Post Office) sponsors a pro bicycle racing team?

German monopoly body head says Deutsche Post stamps ops subsidize Postbank

Deutsche Post World Net AG’s profits derived from its monopoly on stamps may be more than 25 pct of sales and are so high it even subsidizes some activities of its Postbank unit, according to Martin Hellwig, chairman of the independent Monopoly Commission.

In his written comments published in Berliner Zeitung, Hellwig said the postal regulatory agency RegTP’s decision forcing Deutsche Post to cut stamps prices by an average of 4.7 pct next year do not justify plans by the company to cut 10,000 jobs and close down some postal branches.
