Chinese State Council to mediate in post war

The responsibility for settling a fractious China Post dispute is now firmly in the hands of the State Council as yet another deadline imposed by the State Post Bureau came and went at the weekend.
The bureau, governed by the Ministry of Information Industry (MII), has since February been trying to carve out China’s international small package market for itself, evoking strong protest from a rival ministry and international express operators.
The State Council last month gave officials from the MII and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation (Moftec) two weeks to settle their jurisdictional dispute to no avail, so it appointed itself the sole adjudicator at the weekend.

UPS expects to keep growing in China

United Parcel Service (UPS) expects to maintain its robust growth momentum despite the ongoing dispute on express mail with the State Post Bureau.
“You can’t be pessimistic about China,” said K M Liu, senior vice-president of Greater China for UPS in an interview.
Industry analysts predict that China will be the fastest growing airfreight market in the world.

When it comes to the mail, Germany’s postal monopoly can deliver – after all, its carriers voted last week not to go on strike. But when it comes to delivering a smile to shareholders – well, investors are still waiting.
Shares in Deutsche Post AG, issued with great fanfare in a blockbuster offering in November 2000, have traded below their E21 issue price for more than a year. They finished Monday at E14.10 ($13.33), down 34 cents and far below their 12-month peak of E19.81.

Phileo-Pos seek initiatives to strengthen its postal services

PhileoAllied Bhd, which has proposed to change its name to Pos Malaysia & Services Holdings Bhd, is looking into related initiatives concerning logistics to strengthen its existing postal services business.
The areas to be considered are cargo, distribution and transportation with the view to increase the business for the company, said chairman Tan Sri Halim Ali.
“What we currently have is a profitable postal services business with immense long-term potential, and some further ideas on how we hope to enhance this new core business of ours and embark on related initiatives,” he said.

Union anger over Consignia boss's `Hacked off' letter

The chairman of postal group Consignia sparked a row with union leaders today after writing to workers saying he was “hacked off” with negotiators from both sides of the business.

Allan Leighton told 170,000 Royal Mail employees that union officials and managers were “struggling” to find time to talk about the link between a pay rise and the introduction of single deliveries.

“They must all be in the Costa del Sol, or watching every game in the World Cup, so in theory the pay deal cannot go through,” he wrote.

“Frankly I’m hacked off with the whole lot of them and I wouldn’t be surprised if you were too.”

Post chief `Hacked off' over pay deal delays

The chairman of postal group Consignia has written a remarkable letter to his workers, saying he is “fed up” with the politics clogging up the business.
Allan Leighton took a swipe at union negotiators and his own managers, saying he was “hacked off” with all of them.
Using typically colourful language, Mr Leighton said a recently accepted pay deal linked to the introduction of single deliveries should have been agreed months ago.
The first part of the increase – 2.2% – is backdated to last October but will only appear in pay packets this week.

It's time to stamp out U.S. postal monopoly

The price of a first-class stamp will rise to 37 cents on June 30, on top of increases in January 1999 and January 2001. Consumers will pay billions in added postage. Yet even with the $675 million Congress approved to offset the cost of the terrorist attacks, the U.S. Postal Service will continue to lose money.

It does not have to work like this. Whereas our postal service remains a government-owned monopoly, other countries have addressed similar concerns through privatization and limitations on, or elimination of, their postal monopolies. Sweden, Finland, New Zealand and, most recently, the United Kingdom abolished their postal monopolies. Since 1997, all 15 European Union countries have observed limits on their postal monopolies.

TNT International Mail UK launches new web based facility

TNT International Mail UK has launched a web-based electronic bill presentation and payment facility under the name Online Invoicing. The company claims to be the first in the mail and courier industry to offer this feature, which allows customers to access their invoices and service history and make payments using a high-security user name and password. The system has been developed using XML protocol, which allows live data to be accessed for interrogation.
