Saudi Cabinet okays first step toward privatizing postal service

Saudi Arabia’s cabinet on Monday approved moves to transfer the state-run postal services to an establishment jointly managed by the public and private sectors, the official SPA news agency reported.
The cabinet, meeting under Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, also agreed to transfer all assets of the General Post Department to the Saudi Post Establishment which it decided to set up.

Vietnam to Split Post and Telecom

From July 1, Vietnam would divide the post and telecoms sector into two separate groups, following a trial in 11 provinces. The plan will improve the quality of telecoms services and reduce fees. Currently, revenues from telecoms services are being used to subsidize postal services.

TPG and Unions reach agreement on new CAO

TPG (TNT Post) and negotiators from the unions reached an agreement on a new collective labor agreement (CAO) for TPG employees in the Netherlands.
‘The new CAO has a term of 12 months and will run from 1 May 2002 to 1 May 2003. Salaries will be increased by 3.5 percent with effect from 1 June 2002.
The profit share over 2002 will also be increased by 1 percent for this year only, representing a total profit share of 4 percent.

First post – and the last – for Consignia

CONSIGNIA said yesterday it was “more likely than not” to publish its annual report and accounts this week – the first and the last time it will do so under its unpopular brand. The group, formerly the Post Office, will simultaneously announce that it is to ditch its 16-month-old name and call the entire business The Royal Mail. “The chairman [Allan Leighton] has stated it’s unfortunate that when the name changed, it coincided with when things started to go wrong,” a spokesman confirmed yesterday. Last year’s re-branding exercise cost the company pounds 2m and gave it, according to chief executive John Roberts, a “modern, meaningful and entirely appropriate” name which “describes the full scope of the Post Office in a way that the words `post’ and `office’ cannot”.

Consignia aims to deliver profit

Consignia, the renamed Post Office, is expected this week to set out a new programme to move back into profit, at the same time dropping its name in favour of calling itself Royal Mail. The move – in a statement expected on Thursday – will come as the group unveils losses for last year of about Pounds 1.1bn, in spite of better than expected operating losses thought to be Pounds 200m-Pounds 300m.

Magazines face higher post fees

A ROW has broken out between the UK’s magazine industry and the Royal Mail over new postal charges which, it is claimed, could lead to the closure of a large number of magazines.
The magazine industry says the Royal Mail could lose up to £50 million in revenues, money that its parent company Consignia, which will this week announce huge losses, can ill-afford to forgo.

New £2m initiative to keep post offices open

Post Office branches in Wales are benefiting from a national pounds 2m Government fund aimed at keeping the rural network alive. Post Office Ltd, a subsidiary of Consignia, has appointed 28 managers – four in Wales – to focus on finding solutions when rural Post Office branches are threatened with closure.
