Read MoreTHE loss of 30,000 jobs at Consignia will cost the post-office group up to Pounds 700m. When completed, it will be one of the biggest voluntary-redundancy pay outs in British corporate history.
Allan Leighton, Consignia’s chairman, is to report full-year figures on Thursday and will say that an extra 17,000 jobs are to go, in addition to the 13,000 cuts announced already.
Consignia will also announce the biggest loss in the history of the postal service – almost Pounds 1.2 billion. More than Pounds 700m of this will be from exceptional items to cover the huge restructuring programme.
Emirates Post has announced a new procedure concerning the opening of new postal agencies. The Directorate of Zonal affairs will be in overall charge of these agencies whether they are associated with Postal Zones or with Emirates Commercial Services (Empost). At present there are more than 211 licensed shops to provide postal services throughput the UAE, including 29 fully-fledged post agencies and 182 stamp agencies.

Universal Express has secured the exclusive North American rights to a new “over the road” bus vehicle designed to carry both passengers and express freight, and also has plans to sell and lease at least 3,000 of such vehicles over the next 10 years. “This approximately $400,000 motorcoach captures a second stream of revenue by adding to the already active bus passenger business. Prior to this patent, buses simply haven’t had the cargo carrying space to move more than limited express packages”, said Cecilia Vesnesky of Universal Express, Inc.
Nigerian Communications Minister Dr. Mohammed Bello said that “he was happy with the positive developments in the Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST) saying that ‘NIPOST generated a total revenue of N1.8 billion in the year 2001, thus recording an increase of over N700 million over the N1.1 billion figure recorded in 2000. The revenue performance therefore represents 82.6 per cent budgetary performance,’ he said.
