Japan's Postal Unions Prepare for Privatization

Japan Postal Workers’ Union (Zentei) and All Japan Postal Labor Union (Zenyusei) are hammering out the final details of a plan for an equal merger by March, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports in its Saturday edition. The unions plan to join forces to cope with the growing trend toward management streamlining ahead of next April’s launch of the public postal corporation. Inasmuch as Zentei and Zenyusei are solid supporters of the Democratic Party of Japan and the Liberal Party, respectively, their integration is likely to influence how the two opposition parties struggle together as allies. Assuming the merger goes through, the new union would be the third-largest in Japan.

Hungarian Government Will Sell Postabank

Hungary’s new government wants to find a buyer for state-owned Postabank Rt. within the next twelve months, Miklos Kamaras, chief executive of privatization agency APV Rt., told Napi Gazdasag. APV has made no decision yet on whether to relaunch talks with bidders of last year’s failed sale attempt or to call a new tender, Kamaras added.

Jersey Post deliver the goods

The States-owned service posted a £4.2m surplus last year, increasing its turnover by 6.6 per cent to £23.5m. Having delivered 74.9 million items of mail a 7.2 per cent increase on 2000 Jersey Post increased its contribution to the States coffers by 4.2 per cent to £2.1m.
‘2001 was a year of many achievements, including improving services, introducing new technologies, increasing our surplus and making further progress towards incorporation,’ said Jersey Post’s chief executive, John Pinel. ‘Over the next few years we will continue to build on these achievements and use them as a platform on which to improve the distribution and communication solutions that we offer.’

17,000 Royal Mail jobs to go

Royal Mail confirmed yesterday that it is to shed about 17,000 jobs over the next two years as it shakes up the way post is delivered in an effort to return to profitability. Consignia wants urban deliveries to be made by teams of between three and five postal workers operating from a van in bursts of 15 to 20 minutes each. The scheme would see postal deliveries taking four hours rather than the 2.5-hour norm.

Mail collections cut

Post box collections in Gower are being cut to one a day but bosses promise it will not affect the service. Consignia says the changes are being introduced this month to make more efficient use of staff. It says technology has improved over the years and that any first class letters will still reach their destination the following day.

Undeliverable mail up 18%

A record 72 million items of mail were posted last year with addresses which were incomplete, inaccurate, illegible, or left off altogether, the Post Office revealed today. The amount of so-called “undeliverable” mail increased by 18% last year.
