Koizumi criticized by LDP

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi came under fire from a ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) colleague on Tuesday, the first day of the full-fledged deliberations on a package of four bills on postal services deregulation.
LDP member Yamato Inaba told the House of Representatives panel on posts and telecommunications, “The idea of opening the (postal-services) market to the private sector and offering the services based on the principle of a market mechanism cannot coexist with providing equal and universal postal services.”

Is Ryder preparing to be sold?

The way Gregory Swienton talks about the changes he’s made at Ryder System Inc., the $5 billion provider of fleet management and logistics services, you’d think the company was a wheezing middle-aged chain smoker who’d been whipped into shape at a health spa. Arriving in June 1999 as chief operating officer, Swienton saw that it was ?fairly clear that we had some fundamental transformations to take on.” As chief executive since November 2000, his plan has been to take the company back to core competencies — truck fleet management and contract logistics.

Couriers deliver customer service

It isn’t easy to balance customer-service automation with personalized service. Many companies substitute technology for people as they automate customer service, says Claes Fornell, a University of Michigan business professor. But “it takes the buyer time to get used to it and the seller time to perfect it, if ever,” he says.
Some companies are getting it right, according to the University of Michigan’s latest American Customer Satisfaction Index, a survey of more than 70,000 customers on their experiences with almost 200 companies. United Parcel Service Inc. and FedEx Corp., for example, have earned consistently high customer-satisfaction scores on the Michigan index.

Delivering a profit (Poland)

The 34-year career veteran of Poczta Polska, appointed director of the Warsaw postal district in February, has a sharp eye fixed on competitive delivery services in the city through which most of the nation’s postal traffic flows – especially as the market gets ready to take a few more steps toward liberalization forced by European Union (EU) membership.

“Undoubtedly, the greatest challenge is to face competition along with the growing expectation(s) of our customers,” Grobelski said. “We are afraid of EU-member countries’ national operators entering our market.”

USPS Priority Mail: A first-class shame

Priority Mail isn’t delivering well for consumers.
The latest post office statistics show that the typical Priority Mail package reaches its destination more than a day and a half longer than first-class items sent for as little as 34 cents.
Priority Mail, hyped as the Postal Service’s low-cost answer to FedEx and UPS, costs a minimum $3.50.
A third of the Priority Mail slated for delivery within three days didn’t make the target for the fiscal year, compared to a 19 percent miss record for first-class mail during that period.
