Japanese Govt: Postal Bills Top Priority

Ruling bloc and government officials are planning to extend the current Diet session beyond 19 June, possibly until early August, to enable the passage of key bills, sources at the ruling parties and the government said Wednesday [29 May]. Of the four key sets of bills the ruling bloc and government initially hoped to enact, officials are now planning to give top priority to one to revise the Health Insurance Law, critical for financing next fiscal year’s budget, and the postal reform bills that Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi is eager to see passed, the sources said.

Tanzania Post Expands Automation Project

Tanzania Posts Corporation (TPC) has started a multi-million shilling project to automate its services. The automation of the postal network aims at improving the efficiency, reliability and speed of services. The project is part of a major East African postal service automation exercise being implemented jointly in the three East African countries through funding from the East African Development Bank. The $546,000 (Sh42.5 million) project will start in June and will cover regional offices in Bukoba, Iringa, Mtwara, Shinyanga, Tabora and Tanga.

Koizumi Confident Postal Bills Will Pass

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said Tuesday he was confident of getting a postal services deregulation package passed in the Diet despite opposition from many lawmakers in both the ruling and opposition camps, Kyodo News agency reported. ‘Now almost all oppose them, but almost all will support them soon,’ Koizumi said in an address at a ceremony to mark the merger of the Federation of Economic Organizations (Keidanren) and the Japan Federation of Employers Associations (Nikkeiren), into the Japan Business Federation (JBF).

SingTel Talking About Postal Divestiture

Singapore Telecommunications Ltd chief executive Lee Hsien Yang said “SingTel continued to talk to bankers about the possible divestment of its postal unit but it was too early to predict the timing of a decision. He refused to say if the company was looking at divesting other non-core assets. ‘We regularly look at assets which we own,’ he told reporters.

Ukrposhta joins International Money Transfer System

Ukrposhta (Ukraine Postal Service) has joined the International Financial System (IFS), which conducts international money transfers developed by the World Postal Union, Ukrposhta general director Vasyl Mukhin announced.
Mukhin noted that previously every country had its own money transfer system, and that they often were not compatible with one another, which forced the World Postal Union to develop a unified system.

India Post Office to retail govt bonds

AFTER small savings instruments, mutual fund products and bonds, now post offices are set to retail the Government securities (G-secs) through its countrywide network.
The Department of Posts and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have cleared a proposal from a leading primary dealer, IDBI Capital Market Services Ltd (ICMS) to offer G-secs from the secondary market to investors, through the network of the postal department. Investors having a demat account can buy the Government securities of maturities ranging from one to 25 years from the post offices by investing a minimum of Rs10,000 or in multiples.

Deutsche Post plans €1bn bond issue

Deutsche Post, the German postal and logistics group, plans to raise about €1bn ($920m) through a bond issue, FT Deutschland has learned.
The move, the first ever by the former state monopolist, is aimed at transforming short-term liabilities into longer-term ones. Talks with various investment banks were in an advanced state, but a consortium manager had not yet been appointed. The issue was expected within the next few weeks. Deutsche Post declined to comment over the weekend.
