FedEx expects China to keep markets open

The world’s biggest express carrier FedEx said on Tuesday it was confident China, newly on-board the WTO, will allow foreign firms into its small shipments market despite opposition from the state postal bureau.
David Cunningham, president of FedEx Asia Pacific, said a tussle between international firms and the Chinese postal bureau, which wants to control shipments weighing 500 grammes (17.65 ounces) or less, was likely to be settled by a June 15 deadline.

USPS Transforms World's Largest Intranet To Do More With Less

The Postal Service’s Chief Technology Officer today unveiled a major Transformation Plan action item underway to upgrade, modernize, enhance, secure, and simplify the world’s largest intranet infrastructure. The initiative, known as the Advanced Computing Environment (ACE), will save up to $200 million over five years by centralizing and reducing support functions for 130,000 computer users among 28,000 postal facilities nationwide.

Singapore Post pulls plug on digital certificate venture

Singapore Post and its joint venture partner Cisco Computer Security have put th year-old ID.Safe Pte digital certificate operation to sleep.
Apparently, the ambitious venture, whose goal was to certify, verify and authent electronic transactions, has proven to be a commercial failure.

Post merger talks lasted eight months

Talks over the possible merger of the Royal Mail and Parcelforce with the Dutch post office lasted for eight months before being called off, it was revealed today. The Government authorised discussions to be held between Consignia and Dutch postal firm TGP last July, but it emerged in March that common ground could not be found.

K&N planning to hit the acquisitions trail

Kuehne & Nagel (K&N) is planning a series of acquisitions in southern Europe over the next two years to bring its contract logistics operations up to world scale.
New UK chief executive Peter Ulber said: “There are a few spots in Europe where we are not very strong yet.” He identified Spain, Portugal, Italy and France as markets in which the group would look to invest in order to match its logistics activity to the level of North America, where Usco was acquired last year, and Asia, where K&N has a strategic stake in SembCorp.

Wilson strengthens Nordic base with Exceed merger

6 May 2002 Wilson logistics has bought Exceed, a Swedish Air and sea freight forwarder for €17m Exceed was formed by the amalgamation of Air Cargo Express, MelAir and Speditions Service in November 2000. Exceed had a turnover of €140m and an annual loss of €2m.

China shelves postal curbs

Integrators have welcomed China Post’s postponement until 15 June of planned curbs on international express mail operations. A UPS spokesman said postponement was “a step in the right direction and shows the Chinese are willing to work with us”.
