FOREIGN MAIL COURIERS FACE CHINA DEADLINE

NPA has said foreign courier companies could not handle parcels of less than 18 ounces and that their prices must be listed higher than its own. The has NPA set a May 6 deadline for all foreign couriers to apply to the government for permission to continue their operations under the new terms or otherwise cease their business operations.

High Court to rule today in row over FF slogans on mail

The High Court will give judgment today in the row over An Post’s decision to have mail stamped with a Fianna Fáil slogan. Labour Party Senator Joe Costello is seeking an interlocutory injunction restraining An Post from attaching any political slogan to postal packets sent by members of the public through the mail.

Postal strike called off to allow vote on pay deal

POSTAL WORKERS have called off a threat to strike after a tentative deal was struck yesterday to end a long-running pay dispute. Members of the Communication Workers Union had been due to walk out on Wednesday, in the first nationwide stoppage since 1996, but the strike was called off because negotiators for staff and management reached an agreement in talks at the conciliation service Acas.

Consignia chief `has no intention of quitting‘

The chief executive of Consignia has “absolutely no intention” of resigning, the postal group said today amid reports that the Government is to seek a successor. John Roberts, 57, who has been in the post since 1995 and has worked for the Post Office for 35 years, was said to be determined to get on with his job. Reports that the Government would shortly begin a hunt for his successor were described by the Department of Trade and Industry as “absolute rubbish”.

Sino-Japan JV to start courier service

Japan’s Sumitomo Corp and Sagawa Express Co, jointly with China’s Shanghai Dazhong Transportation (Group) Co., will form a joint-venture company for express delivery service, the first of its kind in China.
