TNT to deliver govt mail
TNT Mail Services has won a multi-million-pound government contract to deliver internal mail and stationery for the Department of Works and Pensions, the Inland Revenue, Employment Services and HM Customs and Excise.

Taxpayers will be hit with a £180million bill for axing 3,000 urban post offices, it was revealed yesterday.
There was fury last night as it emerged Consignia – the new name for the Post Office – will not contribute a penny, even though it expects to gain more than £74m from the cost-cutting programme.
The £180m will be used to compensate subpostmasters and subpostmistresses for giving up their livelihood.
Dutch regulator seeks end to TPG postal monopoly
Dutch telecommunications regulator OPTA said on Wednesday it saw no reason to maintain the postal monopoly of transport and logistics company TPG NV, operator of the Netherlands’ post office.
“There are no general economic or social reasons for the remaining postal monopoly to be maintained,” OPTA said in a statement outlining its vision for 2002.
TPG said in a statement it supported the liberalisation of the Dutch postal market, but took issue with some of OPTA’s criticisms.
Deutsche Post response to speculation that it may face fine running into the millions
A previous article printed by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported that Deutsche Post faces being served with a notice of a high fine imposed by the EU, probably as early as May but at the latest in June. Deutsche Post states the FAZ’s account is wrong on several key points. First of all, Deutsche Post has never availed itself of state aid. On the contrary, up to 1996, Deutsche Post paid billions in the form of revenue-based levies and, subsequently, dividend payments to the Federal Government. Secondly, Deutsche Post did not have to pay any fine last year for cross-subsidising its parcel service from its mail monopoly. On the contrary: in anti-trust proceedings at the EU initiated by our competitor UPS, it was precisely the charge of cross-subsidisation that was dismissed.

European Union Transportation Commissioner Loyola de Palacio said if the US and the UK manage to come to an agreement on a bilateral “open skies” pact, the deal will be overruled by a European court later this year.
“The agreement can be signed with a clear short life,” de Palacio told reporters here ahead of the US-EU summit between European President Romano Prodi and President George Bush at the White House.
