DHL enhances trade in the SAARC region

DHL is expanding its business within the The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) region with an integrated product portfolio that will bolster transportation and trade between SAARC nations. DHL is the first logistics player to foray into this key SAARC segment and plans to service the estimated EUR 120 million Express market share in the region.

DHL through Blue Dart has also started a new surface line service called ‘Road Express’ which is offered exclusively within India – Bangladesh trade lane. This service was used during the Cricket Tri – Series, where broadcasting equipment was transported to both Bangladesh and Pakistan.

DHL also recently launched a premium guaranteed money back service – Express 10:30 to Pakistan, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh. This service ensures that the shipment reaches customers before 10:30 a.m.

Business Post Group pre-close interim statement (UK)

Business Post Group plc issued the following pre-close period trading update for the half-year ended 30 September 2008.

Performance has continued in line with the guidance provided at the Annual General Meeting on 9th July, and in line with the Board’s expectations.

The Group has maintained revenue growth, both during the second quarter and for the half-year in total. Group revenues for the half-year increased by 16.3% on the equivalent period last year.

Parcel revenues showed a satisfactory improvement on last year.

Mail business, UK Mail, achieved good growth, driven by new business wins and further mail volumes from existing customers.

Revenues in Specialist Services for the period were up significantly on last year, with new contracts driving a strong improvement in our Courier business.

Business Post Group plc will report its interim results for the six months ended 30 September 2008 on 19 November 2008.

Study: European east-west freight traffic to double by 2030

European east-west freight traffic will double between 2005 and 2030, according to a study recently carried out by Basel (Switzerland)-based ProgTrans and published by the Berlin (Germany)-based Institute for Mobility Research. The fastest growth is predicted for the period up to 2015. ProgTrans director Stephan Kritzinger emphasised that “we would actually need to build an additional three-lane motorway on the east-west axis to cope with the increase in volumes.” The burgeoning goods flows from east to west will benefit German exports and domestic consumption the most, compared with other western countries, such as France or the Netherlands. Kritzinger estimated that road would account for 70% of west-east traffic in 2030, compared with 67% in 2005. His prognosis for rail was 25%, along with 5% for inland navigation. In the other direction, he said that rail will account for about 19%, which will be due to the vast distances to be traversed in Russia in particular. In this direction he estimated that road would account for only 35%, mineral oil and gas pipelines for 42%, and inland barges for 4.2%

Azeri Post mat switch to joint-stock company

Azeri Post may switch to a joint stock company in 3-5 years, said Novruz Mammadov, Director of the Unit.
Azeri Post is a state-owned postal network unit under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies.

He added that the World Bank recommended privatization of Azeri Post while this issue is not on agenda now.

“Azeri Post may also switch to a joint stock company because postal authority has this legal status in some countries. Only 3-4 countries privatized postal service,” he added.

Afghan postal service booms – ministry

Since 1928, when postal services were first introduced to the country, Afghanistan has developed its postal system, with more than 460 nationwide post offices, 10,000 post boxes and seven privately owned postal companies.
On Thursday, the world celebrated International Post Office Day, whcih served as a reminder of how far the country’s postal system had come since 2001.
Afghanistan’s postal service was destroyed during the Soviet Invasion and the following years of civil war.
But,in the past six years, the postal service has been revived, a spokesman for the Communication Ministry, Abdulhadi Hadi, said.
Hadi said the government had made about Afg52 million (USD 1.097) from its postal service in the first six months of the year, a figure up 30 pct on the same time last year.
The ministry hopes to double this figure by the end of the year.

Estonian Post to continue dominating the market

Although the postal market that will be opened in Estonia in three months will make it possible for all postal enterprises deliver letters of up to 50 grams to recipients, Eesti Post (Estonian Post) will continue dominating the market, writes the National Broadcasting.

It is considered likely that competitors will not want to start providing the universal service. Last year Estonian Post earned a loss of nearly 40 million kroons (USD 3.48 million) with the universal service.

CEO of Estonian Post Ahti Kallaste also believes that as the market opens, the provision of the universal postal service will be borne by Estonian Post. According to him, the prices of sending letters and the accessibility of the service will not change.

As is the case for other State-owned enterprises, the Government is to discuss selling Estonian Post as well.

Direct Marketing Association backs Royal Mail discount scheme

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) has revealed its backing for a new scheme to offer businesses a discount on postage for direct mail.

As part of the scheme, businesses that reduce the amount of unnecessary messages they send out could receive a cut-price service per item, as well as other potential savings.

The Head of Postal Affairs for DMA, Alex Walsh, told PrintWeek that the organisation was behind such plans.

He explained: “We’re hoping companies take part for a variety of reasons, as it can do a lot of good.

“Under the terms of the scheme, companies receive a discount by complying with Royal Mail requirements.”

The DMA recently revealed plans to recognise the best door drop campaigns carried out in the UK by businesses and agencies.

UPS Freight reveals final phase of its 2008 network enhancements

UPS Freight announced the final phase of its 2008 network enhancements, speeding up transit schedules on more than 1,900 traffic lanes in eight western states.

The improvements mark the third round of network enhancements over the past five months by UPS’s heavy freight division.

In August, UPS Freight revised its network to establish two-day lanes from Chicago to Dallas, Boston to St. Louis and Philadelphia to Miami. The enhancements also expanded the next-day footprint of UPS Freight to include Cincinnati to Memphis and Columbus, Ohio, to Charlotte.

Earlier this year, UPS Freight announced new on-time performance guarantees. Those guarantees will be extended to the enhanced transit times announced today at no additional cost.
