British Post Office Owner to Cut 15,000 Jobs

Consignia, owner of the Post Office, is expected to announce a further 15,000 redundancies in May.
The move is likely to coincide with the annual results of the Post Office, which will show record losses of about UKpound 700 million. That means Consignia is losing UKpound 1.5 million a day.
The staff cuts will be in the Royal Mail division. They come on top of a similar number of redundancies at the Parcel Force operation announced last week. Those losing their jobs will include sorting staff and postmen.

Courier industry giant, Fedex Red Star Express, says it is embarking on a fresh expansion scheme with a view to extending its business frontiers across West African sub-region. The company, as part of the on-going project has opened a new operational base in Cotonou, Benin Republic, as well as in Accra, Ghana to serve as experimental units of the scheme.

Post Union cuts funds to Labour by third

THE Communication Workers’ Union is to cut its donations to the Labour Party. Billy Hayes, the general secretary, said yesterday it would cut its funding by pounds 500,000 over the next three years, a third of the CWU’s usual donation. “Like any other organisation, we have a limited budget. We have to make decisions about how best to campaign on behalf of our members in the postal industry and in telecommunications.” The CWU, the largest postal workers’ union, has threatened strike action over plans by Consignia, formerly the Post Office, to make a further 10,000 staff redundant in addition to almost 5,000 job losses announced earlier this year.

Price of Irish stamps rises to 41 cents

Postage will cost more from Tuesday after An Post won an interim rise in the price of standard letter post from 38 cent to 41 cents.
The price rise, which had been expected, is the first since 1991 in the cost of the ordinary letter tariff. It will cover postage within Ireland and to Britain for letters and postcards up to 50 grams in weight. Until now, the weight limit for the basic rate has been 25 grams.

China’s State Postal Bureau, under rising pressure in the marketplace, is trying to use its role as regulator to make life harder for its competitors, state media said Friday.
The bureau, also known as China Post, has given express delivery companies a tough choice in an attempt to save its own courier service, Express Mail Service, the China Daily reported.

EU Challenges Belgian Post's e-Mail Monopoly

The European Union Commission has launched legal proceedings against the monopoly of Belgium’s Post Office over registered email, reports de Tijd. The move follows a complaint from Hypertrust, a technology firm based in Leuven that wants to provide such services. A 1999 Belgian law gives De Post a monopoly on registered emails for administrative and legal procedures. But the Commission contends there is no justification for excluding competition from this market on security grounds.”
