IBM to provide new retail banking system for U.K. Post Office

Post Office Ltd has awarded IBM a $71 million contract to design, build and manage a new e-business infrastructure which will transform Post Office counter systems, connecting them to major banks and its own new Card Account.
Customers will be able to use their local Post Office to access bank accounts and withdraw benefits and new tax credits such as pensions and child tax credits. This is particularly important in remote or rural areas where people may not have easy access to the cash machines or bank branches.

UK regulator hints at delay to postal competition

MAIL regulator Postcomm today gave its strongest indication yet that the introduction of competition to Consignia will be delayed until well into 2003.
In what is being seen as a victory for Allan Leighton, the new chairman of the Post Office and Royal Mail group, regulator Graham Corbett today signalled he is prepared to let up on the pace of market liberalisation to allow the heavily-lossmaking Consignia get its act together.

All Change at TNT businesses

The Taylor Barnard name is to disappear as TNT Logistics splits its business into two divisions – dedicated and multi-user – which will combine TNT Logistics, TNT Network Logistics, TNT Newsfast and Taylor Barnard. The new dedicated and muli-user divisions will be known as TNT Logistics and TNT Network Logistics, although TNT Newsfast is to retain its name.

DHL's SE Asia Operating Costs Up 4%

Courier company, DHL Worldwide Express’ operating costs in South-East Asia has increased by 4 per cent due to higher crude oil prices. Globally, its operating costs jumped by 1 per cent. Though the percentage may seem insignificant, it could still hurt the company’s profit especially in the South-East Asia as it uses commercial aircraft for its operation.

US Postal service to revamp mail system

The U.S. Postal Service next week will announce a plan to restructure the nation’s mail system to make it operate more like a private business.
Postal Service officials say the planned revamping of mail service could have a broad effect on the $900-billion-a year mailing industry, affecting everything from the way people choose to send correspondence to thousands of postal jobs.
The most likely scenario would allow Postal Service administrators to decide rates and service changes without the nearly year-long regulatory procedure currently required by the agency’s 1970 charter.

Royal Mail decides size does matter

Royal Mail today announced plans to price items by size rather than weight alone for the first time since stamps were introduced in 1840. The cost of sending a bulky parcel would increase under the new system, although the price of posting a standard size letter would remain the same or even fall, the company said. Increased automation in the postal service means larger items often having to be dealt with by hand at extra cost.
