Brazil to open Post Office internet booths, to pull 150 million out of digital gap

Brazil is pledging to install Internet booths in 4,000 post offices next year, giving free Web access to some 150 million people in a massive effort to bridge the country’s gaping digital divide, President Fernando Henrique Carodoso announced Tuesday.
In his regular weekly radio address to the nation, Cardoso promised to “guarantee one of the great conquests of the modern world to 150 million Brazilians.” Starting next year, 4,000 free access Internet kiosks will be placed in post offices, initially in towns and cities of more than 10,000 inhabitants. Further kiosks would then be installed in other, smaller towns across Latin America’s biggest country, Cardoso said.

Brazil: Bradesco expansion plans go beyond the Post Office

The Bradesco bank is working to be ready for the installation of its Banco Postal software, which will be installed in the Brazilian Post Office chain by the end of the year. The Banco Postal system will offer customers a range of services greater than is currently offered by the non-banking agencies who offer bill payment services. Customers will be linked to the Bradesco chain and will have access to its ATMs. Unique low-cost services will be offered only in the Banco Popular chain. Bradesco is also looking for opportunities to offer its services in supermarkets, including the giant Pao de Acucar chain. This decentralization of services outside of the bank’s regular network is also expected to improve services for customers in its branches.

EP Europost to Muscle In on Deutsche Post's Mass Mail Monopoly

Handlesblatt has reported that “Deutsche Post AG is set to face tougher competition on its home market. TNT Post Groep (TPG) of the Netherlands and Hermes General Service (HGS), a subsidiary of German mail-order giant Otto-Versand, have set up a joint venture that is to compete against Deutsche Post on the mass-mail delivery market. TPG and HGS intend to ensure that their new joint venture, EP Europost AG, will not just be a niche player, operating in the shadow of Deutsche Post.
