BotswanaPost Launches Hybrid Mail

BotswanaPost launched Hybrid Mail at a function at the Gaborone International Conference Centre (GICC).

Hybrid Mail is a service designed for organisations that mail large quantities of invoices, statements, time-sensitive notices and business mail.

Launching the new service offered by BotsanaPost, Maun West MP, Ronald Ridge, said the facility would contribute to sustainable national growth by reducing the cost of mail service in offices.

The state-of-the-art facility is capable of producing 15 000 pieces of mail per hour. It relieves companies of expensive tasks such as printing, enveloping and transportation, and ensures an impression appearance because advanced laser printing and mail-processing technology is used.

Botswana Post Acting Director General, Ruth Mphathi, said contrary to common belief that the information superhighway is driving the Post Office to irrelevance, the postal sector is actually riding on the crest of technological changes.

ICT has offered an opportunity for the Post Office to provide a natural gateway to the Information Society, especially for rural communities.

Mphathi said the domestic letter mail is on a downtrend for obvious reasons, while the business mail product (including Government Mail) was on an upward trend in correlation with national economic growth. This is where the Hybrid Mail product comes in – to provide a seamless, cost-efficient solution to mailroom challenges.

Botswan Post Board Chairman, Martin Mokgatlhe, said the Post Office continues to re-examine itself on an on-going basis, adding that early this year, its five-year strategic plan known as Pinagare was reviewed.

Post wants EU10 Billion for Postbank (Germany)

Deutsche Post AG may struggle to sell its Deutsche Postbank banking division as bidders are unwilling to match price expectations, WirtschaftsWoche reported, citing unidentified Finance Ministry officials.

Deutsche Post wants at least 10 billion euros (USD 16 billion) for Germany’s biggest consumer bank, a person familiar with the matter said, according to the report. That’s above offers of between 8 billion euros and 9 billion euros, the magazine said.

Spain’s Banco Santander SA and Lloyds TSB Group Plc are still interested in acquiring Deutsche Postbank, the magazine said. Deutsche Bank AG doesn’t want to pay more than 10 billion euros for a purchase and Commerzbank AG is no longer bidding for the Bonn-based bank, WirtschaftsWoche said.

Deutsche Post is also getting doubts about selling the banking division that provides stable earnings as the rising oil price is putting pressure on the logistics unit, according to the report.

PTT entry into logistics business signals plans to expand (Turkey)

The Postal and Telecommunications General Directorate (PTT) has launched operations in the logistics business to establish a powerful rival against the industry’s burgeoning private companies.
Seeking a way to increase business as its main service field, mail delivery, which is rapidly becoming obsolete with the rising dominance of e-mail, PTT is shifting its attention to the logistics business. Its new service, PTT Kargo, was introduced at a press conference in Ýstanbul yesterday with the participation of Transportation Minister Binali Yýldýrým. The minister said PTT is continuously expanding its sphere of interest to cover more and more fields for the sake of better and faster service.
In 2004 the PTT initiated the PTT Bank project to provide its customers with inexpensive and reliable banking services. Money transfers via PTT’s network have proven attractive to the general public because sending money through PTT channels costs roughly one-tenth the charge to transfer funds by way of a bank. PTT’s extensive countrywide network includes 4,000 offices, 30,000 workers and 5,000 vehicles.
Minister Yýldýrým noted that he was confident PTT Kargo will very quickly achieve an important position in the cargo transport and logistics business, which handled 1.2 billion packages last year. PTT Kargo enters the competition with important advantages, one of the most striking of which is that it will charge a flat rate regardless of distance. For the minister, the creation of a state-run company in the logistics business should not be taken as a blow to the presence of private companies. Instead, this should be seen as an attempt to improve the quality of service in the sector and to empower it with more dynamism.

IFA urges submissions to save postal network

IFA Countryside Chairman David Wilkinson today urged all rural dwellers to make a submission to the Department of Communications on the opening up to competition of the postal network.
Mr Wilkinson said: “It is vital with the introduction of competition that the pursuit of profits does not undermine the rural postal service. The Universal Service Obligation included in the directive must be defined when being passed into Irish Law. This definition must safeguard a daily service for all parts of the country as well as ensuring prices remain the same throughout the Ireland. Rural dwellers must not be forced to make do with a reduced service and/or higher prices.”

DX Expands Mail Sorting Capability

DX, the independent postal service, has opened a new sorting centre in Avonmouth.
The new centre is the result of a good year for DX, which has gone from strength to strength, even during the bitter postal strike at Royal Mail last year.
DX, which operates a network of pickup and collection points via solicitors and financial service companies, says the new GBP 650,000 centre means it can improve the speed and accuracy of sorting operations and a further 30 new jobs have been created.
In May, DX announced that over 600 Glasses Direct customers now receive their glasses via The DX Group on a next day delivery basis.
The specialised service ensures peace of mind for Glasses Direct customers as DX obtains a signature on delivery, and where a signature is not possible, the glasses are posted through customers letter boxes using a three point identification criteria of the property noted. This provides Glasses Direct with the assurance that glasses have been delivered to the right place.
The DX Group also offers a re-delivery service free of charge to Glasses Direct customers, so if for any reason the customer is not able to receive them, they can arrange to have their glasses re-delivered the next day to an existing or new address.
Other clients of The DX Group include the Identity & Passport (IPS) Office, members of the legal industry and major credit card & financial services.

USPS' revised network plan released

The US Postal Service has just submitted to congress a revised network plan. These plans are not final and are subject to negotiations. UNI Post & Logistics affiliate, NPMHU (National Postal Mail Handlers Union) has been looking into the plan and is concerned with the issue of plant consolidation, as well as the potential subcontracting of work now being performed at the Bulk Mail Centers. The NPHMU will vigorously oppose this and pursue all its negotiated rights to protect mail handlers’ jobs.

TNT on course for growth

TNT says it is well-placed to ride out the effects of any global economic downturn thanks to minimal exposure to the US domestic market.

Last week, rival FedEx reported a fourth-quarter net loss of USD 241m (GBP 121m) and full-year net income of USD 1.13bn (GBP 568.3m), down some 44 pct on the previous year, mainly caused by the weak US economy.

And fellow US-based operator UPShas already warned of falling domestic demand.

However, Marie-Christine Lombard, group MD for TNT’s Express division, says: “We are not affected by the US slowdown – we have no exposure in the US, in some ways to our great regret and in others not.”

In a reference to DHL, which has recently announced large-scale cutbacks in its US operation, she adds: “[DHL] has paid for it – and now you see what the result is. When you have very strong operators in very mature markets it is very hard to enter the market late.”

Despite the sell-off of its logistics arm in 2006, TNT is still targeting growth in the plus-30kg consignment sector, such as pallets and other oversized express freight, says Lombard.

“What we have found is that clients trading on express flows have other flows that they would like to use TNT for. We want to capture those and arrange solutions for our clients.”

Marketing and Sales Director Jan-Willem Breen says that a broad product offering, particularly what it describes as “Economy Express”, is also helping the firm to survive the downward economic pressure by allowing its customers to switch traffic to cheaper ground-based options.
