UK Post Office offers alternative to issuing cheques

Post Office payout allows companies to distribute promotional incentives, refunds and cash payments at a fraction of the cost of issuing cheques. Using the latest barcode technology, companies simply send a reference code by text, email or post which customers take to any of the UK’s 14,000 Post Office branches to receive an instant cash payment.

The Post Office payout solution can be tailored to meet the needs of individual businesses, with identity verification available to provide increased security for higher value transactions. An optional data capture service is also available to allow you to gather valuable market intelligence about customers’ preferences and purchasing habits.

Not only does Post Office payout make it quicker and easier for customers to receive payments, it also removes barriers for businesses making payments to people who do not have a bank account. The service also offers the option to send payments using postal orders so your customers can pay it into their bank account.

Q-Post signs pact with bank

Q-POST and Doha Bank yesterday signed an agreement under which the post office would print, develop and envelop the bank’s monthly statement to be delivered to its customers.

The new facility, said Q-Post chairman Ali Mohamed al-Ali, would be helpful to both parties and would help save considerable amount of time and money.

He said the Q-Post had been taking up similar ventures with other companies after the installation of a new multi-purpose sorting machine at its head office two years ago.

He said it had turned out to be big successes and had helped the Q-Post generate additional businesses.

Al-Ali said the new arrangement would enable the bank to deliver the monthly statement in less than 24 hours after it was prepared and enveloped at the General Post Office.

Usually, the same job would have taken anywhere between four to seven days, he said.
The Q-Post chairman said the corporation had earlier handled the distribution of Doha Bank’s ATM and Visa cards.

Al-Ali said the handling of monthly statements called for more confidentiality and security and this was one of the reasons why Q-Post was chosen.

Abdulla al-Assadi said the new arrangement would help the bank ease the services to its growing clientele.

Q-POST is planning to introduce electronic post (e-Post) services next year.

Mail the best way to reach consumers: Pitney Bowes study

A new study claims that, despite today’s digital world, consumers clearly prefer mail over other communications vehicles such as e-mail for receiving new product information and offerings as well as confidential business communications including bank statements and financial reports.

The study, the fourth mail preference survey commissioned by Stamford, CT-based Pitney Bowes since March 1999, found that the majority of consumers (73 percent) prefer mail for receiving new product announcements or offers from companies they do business with, as compared to 18 percent for e-mail. Mail was also preferred by 70 percent of respondents for receiving unsolicited information on products and services from companies with which they are not currently doing business.

For confidential communications such as bills, bank statements and financial reports, respondents overwhelmingly preferred mail (86 percent) as their channel of choice, as compared with 10 percent for e-mail. This response is virtually identical to the response in the 2004 survey, which also showed consumer preference for mail at 86 percent.

The survey also found that consumers are less likely to discard unopened mail (31 percent) – including new product brochures, catalogs or other advertising materials – than they are to discard unsolicited e-mails about new products (53.2 percent).

The survey also probed consumers on specific advantages they see in mail versus unsolicited e-mail and telephone calls.

Swiss intermodal operators on a roll

Swiss intermodal operators no longer need subsidies from their government, because intermodal is performing so well, according to operator Hupac.

Bernhard Kunz, director of Hupac, said the success was partly thanks to a pro-rail freight policy by the Swiss government that included substantial investments in both terminals and infrastructure.

Three years ago, rail freight volumes surpassed those of road in Switzerland.

Hupac is planning to invest EUR 44m (USD 56m) a year by 2010 in new terminal infrastructure and rolling stock.

The Swiss government is currently funding vital infrastructure developments including two tunnels, one of which is being inaugurated this week, the second in 2017.
Hupac currently moves around 1.1m teu of goods a year around Europe, using 100 trains with dedicated terminals and IT systems.
